Wouldn't the availablility of cheap processing power lend itself to people using purpose built applications at home, which do not use shared resources? If I have a super fast computer sitting at home, why would I bother using cloud computing which relys on a very slow internet connection?

Basically what will happen is that everyone will have some type of cloud terminal priced at $99 which they can replace twice a year, lets say. It will be primarily used for social networking, research, entertainment, and will represent 95% of internet traffic. If you lose it, gets stolen, or you break it you won't care, since all of your information is online; kind of like owning a blackberry presently. Intensive applications will still remain on the desktops such as proE or visual studio. Desktops will go their own route as well, but market share will fall.

Because it's the cloud, man, the CLOUD!!! Who needs an office suite with 20 years of design experience behind it when you can run some crippled quasi-compatible hack in your web browser? Who would ever want to store music or video collections locally when it's possible to stream them at the same quality as a '90s-era camcorder with dozens of hiccups? Who needs special-purpose graphics and media applications like Photoshop and Avid when you can use an Ajax-enabled MS Paint clone? Why would large corporations want to run their own Exchange servers when employees can just use Gmail? And games? People still play those?


You know how it is Bobby - with any new invention or idea there will always be people who try to take it to ridiculous extremes. Never mind that cloud computing is monumentally inefficient in just about every conceivable way; it's the Google way, and therefore the future of computing.
