I'm no fan of NI, but I made a post about Reaktor a couple of days ago - Reaktor isn't really a synthesizer, it's a synthesizer factory. If you're looking for something that's easy to simply crack open and start experimenting with, you definitely made the wrong choice; however, considering what it is, I think it's a reasonably well-designed UI. Unfortunately, HCI design is terrible in general in the audio world. Knobs are a fine affordance on a piece of physical equipment but completely unsuited to mouse/keyboard control, and yet they are everywhere, primarily because designers are just trying to mimic the look and feel of physical gear. Affordances that would be clearly superior on a computer, like X/Y controllers and other canvases, are comparatively rare. Keyboard support is often nonexistent.

It's just something we have to deal with as producers. And it's one of the great things about designing your own synths either from scratch or with a tool like Reaktor; you get to make your own UI, one that's suited to your personal tastes and work habits.

It's not designed for simplicity, quite the opposite really. Regardless, there are a bunch of pre-made synths included in Reaktor, with presets and all. Take a look at the "Getting Started" guide and you'll be loading them up in no time.

it sounds interesting! cant wait to make my own VSTs! Especialy the panels! Do you think its possible to make 909 drummachine to be used in Logic? Maybe its already done? I need to quit my job

Yeah, you could make a drum machine in Reaktor.

I bet at least a few people have already made a 909 clone for it...

man im getting exited, could it be possible to make a groovemachine like old rolands or even the machinedrum, oh my gawd, software-version of that would fucking rock. i know what im gonna use my christmas holidays for. does it have pattern sequencers? oh gosh.

how good are the actual soundquality on the stuff u make in there? is it usefull at all? was thinking about making a easy baselinesynth for example.

How about you close TA for a few hours, spend 30 minutes with the Getting Started manual, and another hour and a half with Reaktor, then come back with questions, or at least a somewhat informed opinion of your own? Just a thought.

It's as good as you make it. You're the one putting together the oscillators, filters, etc. You could probably make a 909 clone if you had a schematic for the 909 and knew how to follow it. I think a few other TAs have already made and posted some pretty decent Reaktor ensembles.

If you're asking about the quality of the modules themselves - they're the same as what you'd get if you wrote a C program to generate a waveform, that's the easy part of synth design, so you don't have to worry about that aspect.

It's good to see you willing to dig deeper - just don't expect to have the ultimate synth cranked out in 20 minutes, software design is hard.
