Apple is great when it comes to their IPS monitors, however, proprietary connections (mini-display port only on the 24" LED Cinema Display for example) make the deal not so good. Not considering that you pay a premium for the apple name in the first place.

If you're looking to drop $1,200-1,300 on a monitor perhaps you should look at some of the other companies using high end IPS panels in their displays.

Dell - has the U2410 monitor right now: 24" 16:10 (1920x1200) S-IPS panel, retails for $599 but discounts bring that monitor down quite a bit in price. If you're looking for larger (more resolution), perhaps taking a look at their 30" offerings would be a decent bet.

HP - has the LP2475W which is the equivalent monitor to the Dell, however, it seems to be a better panel (from what I've read from reviews) when it comes to gaming. Lower input lag.

NEC - NEC always seems to have some of the best offerings on the market, though they do come at a similar price premium just like the Apples. Though, they do come with better connectivity. Also, if you're in need of a display that needs to be color accurate as possible, NEC and the apple might be the true contenders in this price bracket (Look at Eizo if you're looking to go higher).

Though, NEC doesn't seem to have a monitor that will display a resolution larger than 1920x1200 right now (at least I wasn't finding it).

I don't think you'll be disappointed if you choose they Apple. It's a gorgeous display, but the lack of connectivity and high price are 2 major shortcomings that I personally have a difficult time getting over.
