I agree with what Ben said. A correctly set up hardware firewall (router) is the best defense from computer attacks. Being smart with your software/browsing/email is the best defense from being infected.

In all my years using a PC, I have never been infected with a virus. Having said all that I still run Avast "just in case". It's a good, easy to use program, that uses minimal computer resources.

cheers, and domesticated. I guess being my lappy my biggest worry is that when i take it out, wi-fi hotspots, hotels etc, will I still have the same sort of protection from their stuff?

Here's a quick article on hotel hotspot safety, in general it's a bad idea to conduct any serious business, especially banking related, on their networks. In this case, you would probably want a firewall of some kind.

Aye. I might want to quickly check my internet banking for example, so I might get something like bitdefender. It'll cover both my machines & potentially one more and is a good price.

and a +1 to the I don't use this software peeps. You should also partition your computer so that you can reformat without losing anything. Some people even point their profile to a partitioned drive so that after they reinstall their windows image they still have all their preferences.
