what else were you expecting? this movie is visuals 1st, story 2nd. The story was a little on the cheese side and predictable but who cares really. It wasn't as bad as transformers 2 storyline!

What was I expecting? After 15 years of devoting his time to it, I would've expected more than just relying on visuals to carry a movie.

I totally agree, it was visual first, and it was very good at that. I'm not saying it was a bad movie by any means, and I know most people will enjoy it more than I did, and I'm glad they do.

What gets me is hearing some people comparing it to Star Wars. That movie had both amazing visual effects for it's time and a great storyline. Avatar only had one of the two.

Absolutely.

Its definately stupid to compare this movie to Star Wars. Avatar is nothing compared to Star Wars when it comes to storyline and creativity. Avatar is definately better than 50% of the movies this year.

It's easy to say that when you're talking Avatar vs. Star Wars franchise, but can the same be said for Avatar vs. Star Wars IV: A New Hope?

I'm only throwing that out there to keep things in perspective, it's been too long since I've seen Episode IV to think of it objectively as an individual film rather than part of a trilogy. But I think that's an important distinction to make.

Avatar is intended as a trilogy, right now we've only seen the first part, and as such I think it's perfectly fair to compare it to Star Wars for now; there's no reason to doubt that it can achieve the same level of cultural significance and impact on movie making. Episode IV had its fair share of negative reviews and complaints when it came out as well, and Avatar still has infinite potential to build an amazing trilogy from here. In terms of a starting point I think Cameron did a great job. So I definitely don't think it's stupid to compare the two.
-----------
On that same note but in reference to people complaining about the story line being totally unoriginal: you can find an entire Wiki page about things that Star Wars took it's influences from link (which appears to be mainly Flash Gordon and The Hidden Fortress). So yea, so far they strike me as pretty similar.

I agree with you, the movie is not 'legendary' status type of movie, but more of a trendstarter...it is foolish to compare those two

We ended up walking out halfway through. I never do that, it speaks volumes about how bad this is. I see it as a kids movie for adults that still wish they were kids.

I didn't like it at all neither.

Working in the VFX field, I do have respect and appreciate the massive amount of work it must have taken to accomplish this. As well as the steps forward in animation, and some moments where so much money was thrown at me that my jaw dropped.

But I didn't like the story, I didn't like the colors that made my eyes bleed, and I really didn't like the character's design, especially the creatures in the jungle. I was just in disbelief.

But most of all, I didn't feel nothing.

I saw 'Where the wild things are' one week prior to Avatar, also a kid's movie. And I prefered by far the visual fx and design, as well as the story,

But I am not a kid. I am sure that a 13 year old would prefer Avatar.

See?

I'm glad I'm not the only one that felt that way. The only reason we went to see it, was because a good friend would not shut up about it, and he generally has been pretty good with making movie suggestions in the past.

When I told him we walked out on it, he accused us of not going in with an "open mind". I told him that this movie had nothing to require you to bring a mind for. No thinking needed at all. They took a story that has been done a million times before, and managed to make it more predictable than I thought humanly possible.

No substance in this whatsoever. I know by now that I can not expect Hollywood to reinvent the wheel at all anymore, because if I did, I would hardly ever be able to watch an American movie if i went into everything with huge expectations. It amazes me at what Hollywood has become. Mindless remakes and maybe one or 2 original screenplays without holes in the plot big enough to drive a big rig through out of Tinseltown per annum.

Et tu Brute.
