Good point, Kaidreas. Being a CORe regular, I kind of know where many people come from, so I didn't even think of that. But you do have a point.

Here in Brazil most people I know are religious, even the young. Most of my friends believe in God, many go to some kind of Church, and just a few of them are atheist like me. Needless to say, irreligiosity is even less common among the elderly, and the parents of my brother's girlfriend are the only atheist adult couple I know.

No; neither of my parents is religious, but my mother is one of my best students, whereas my father would probably best be described as a mere agnostic.

Confiscate-all-private-property socialism, fascist-like conservatism, anarchistic libertarianism, transhumanism, conspiracy theory ideas: just pick one at random out of the big batch of ideas and positions that most people consider "wacky" or unusual, and I bet you more men will hold it. But that is just going off of personal experience, so I might be wrong.

I think it probably has more to do with women being less likely to voice their beliefs or to try debating them as aggressively.

My mum and sister are into all that new age "spirituality", "DIY religion" bullshit. The conversations I overhear make me so frustrated, particularly when they try to use science to support this nonsense.

"The laws of physics say energy is never lost, only transferred. This is why when a person dies, the energy of their consciousness is able to transfer into a new body blah blah blah".

Shit drives me insane.

They hired a numerology book from the library this week. My dad (PHD Psych) and I (B.Sc) went through it with a magnifying glass and showed them it's a pile of idiocy. Numerology is when you take the numbers of your birthday and infer facts about your personality from them. On multiple pages, the author added up numbers wrong. We would get a pencil and write: "The sum of these numbers is truly X. Now THAT is mysterious!". I also lol'd at how they had references to Buddhism in the book, when it is clearly based on years relative to the death of Jesus.

Why do so many women get sucked into this shit? I don't know any males who do. It's not like my mum and sister are dumb either; my mum has the highest university GPA out of all of us.

My dad grew up in a Baptist church.

My mom wasn't religious at all.

Before they got married, my dad told my mom that he couldn't keep seeing her if she didn't attend church, so she started to attend.

Now it's pretty equal between the two, but I think my mom cares more than my dad, as a rule.

It makes sense to me, religion is a very emotional thing. And women are more likely to be moved by emotion. Men are more likely to be impressed by logic, and religion has very little to work with.

I've read that in several books about Buddhism... and people often ask me why I opted for atheism instead

My mom is waaaay more religious then my dad. My mom thanks god for every positive things that happens whereas my dad barely mentions religion. They're both religious but neither of them go to church very much (my dad hasn't in a long time, my mom only goes for holidays and such). I'm an atheist, my mom does not accept it whereas my dad does.

My parents couldn't be more equally non-religious than they are now.

Interesting phrase. In the U.S. we would say that someone "checked out" or "borrowed" a numerology book. "Hire" is reserved for people here.
