No I described it terribly (in response to my last post not benii) its def noise lfo'd over a bass but I just can never get the same harmonics they do, listened to it again.
In the first example I don't hear any noise but theres a real dry and raw bass that comes in, sounds almost hardstyle, is that a regular distorted saw wav? It just sounds real different then the distorted saw basses I come up with.
Also, the sparks I was talking about was actually an fx playing with the bass. Its in example 2, but I never got my noise sounding that way before, I have no idea what kind of distortion/filters are being used. And in final example 3 I think its bit crushed noise playing with the bass, whatever it is I like that bass the most. But I noticed in tracks I do myself, I usually go crazy trying to get my mid bass to groove, when I notice in other peoples tracks its usually just a very harmonic sort of sub bass driving both the kick and mid bass. Because the mid basses all sound rather plain in a lot of pro tracks, pretty much how mine sound now, its the harmonics from the sub that give it that unstable driving groove and energy. Thats why when the one guy mentioned focusing less on the mid and more on the sub it kinda caught my attention because I notice a lot of pros seem to do this. Keep the kick and bass stable and spinning, then have a 3rd sub or fx element that is bouncing out of control and throwing harmonics everywhere.

The hardstyle attack bass your talking about can be created with normal attack bass and clever use of distortion through something similar to CamelAudio Camelphat. |
And yep I think in the first example thats just distortion being used on the offbeat sub, but in the last example I was trying to figure out where all the harmonics were coming from, it sounds like bit crushed noise I love the way it floats around the kick and keeps it driving.

With the virus, its a love hate relationship.. when I first got it, it was buggy as hell... in fact when you had unison mode on and you ventured to play more than 2 notes (plucks ) at the same time, say you'd want to be daring and play 3 note chord plucks... it will sound like it was unquantized.... for the pricetag, not acceptable... and the tech support found a million ways to blame MY system... I shut them up quickly when I gathered demos from patterson, colontonio, and downey , all playing the same pattern and all with the same problems....
I will HOWEVER say that OS4 .. is finally MOSTLY perfectly working..
Every single os up til now was so problematic... with note timing, and polyphony... so I will say I do like it a lot more now. But for the price, them taking over 3 years to get their software to work right, is an absolute joke....
So unless you need it for its acid sounds (which are basically very unique to the virus due to the filters), theres not much you cant do on software synths that it can do...

Hey guys,
Okay so for basslines..
i do use a lot of sounds to layer up, usually anywhere from 4-6 total to make up bass parts of my track... But don't let this confuse you at all.. it really is not too bad.... there is always only ONE SUB bass part. I actually USUALLY use novation v-station for this, as it sounds great when u get that filter cutoff down pretty low, and its got a real nice bass end if you up the resonance a little bit.
For all the other parts, these are to support that sub bass, and provide more rhythm and texture (A lot of my basses lately are no longer offbeat so it depends on which project you are looking for). Great synths for texture are Vanguard (this is really the ONLY thing I even use vanguard for, because it has a unique texture and I actually kinda hate it for anything else), V-station (has some nice bite when you eq it right), and now I am using the Virus TI for a lot more of the "mid-bass" duties.
SIdechain ALL you basses... that really is the most important thing to having a big bass sound BUT ALSO to be able to get cracked in the head by the kick drum... a lot of times I hear tracks where the producer has not sidechained his bass synths, and the track will greatly suffer...
I hope this helps guys!! I friend of mine showed me this thread so I hope it does point you in the right direction! |
I read this all the way through and thought "what does this idiot know?" Then I looked at the name. :P
Thanks.
Weren't you the one bitching in that Vimeo video about the Virus?
