Cute story.
One of my friend's proposed to his longtime girlfriend over chess. Needless to say they're both Russian. He plays professionaly (not sure about levels of competition in chess, but he's up there, dude gets paid) and he met his g/f after a tourney in NYC. Her brother was also in the competition, so she came to support him. They all went out afterwards to a bar and just started talking - that was 4 years ago.
Alright, so back to the story. They went to Rome for a "vacation", and he convinces her that one of his "dreams" is to play chess in front of the Colosseum... or on the steps or something like that.
Anyway they get there, he breaks out the board. And she's alright at chess, I guess, but he's obviously going to obliterate her. However he manipulates it so that the game ends in stalemate. As she's mulling over the board, checking her moves (which there are none of), he puts the ring on top of his king piece. So as she looks up, notices the ring, he asks her to be his queen (I know really cheesy) and she agrees.
I'm sure there's a ton of sappy proposals out there, but this one really took the cake. And speaking of cakes, at their wedding - on top of the cake, they had a king and queen piece, instead of the normal crap. And the wedding was black and white themed. Like - the guests on the brides side, all wore black, and the groom's all wore white.
