Yes, I agree with you again. What I'm trying to get at is that it's not wrong what the American kids did, but how would it not offend or make the other nationalities feel like outcasts? Why must they form a group and wear their national shirt? I'm not talking about rights, I'm just talking about the subliminal message that is being put forth. I wouldn't be mad at the German kids in my example, but I would feel as if they were passively solidifying the line between them and I. Wouldn't you feel that way?

Well... maybe, but that's just how it is anywhere; people of similar backgrounds hang together. There are always separate cliques in school based on athletics, culture, science nerds, etc. That's normal IMO, and it doesn't mean that people are "taking sides" and disrespecting other groups. But there is this climate of political correctness, with a mythical fantasy land that exists where we're made to believe that if we don't have a black, asian, handicapped, Indian, and Hispanic person as part of our social circle, than we're just culturally insensitive bigots. Forcing people together doesn't work... it's gotta happen naturally based on individual personal relationships.

In your Germany example, if I saw that happen I'd think, "What can I say? It's their country and I'm in it... it's not my place to tell them how to 'celebrate diversity'".

Again, to be clear, I believe it's an expression of veiled racism. It's a carefully controlled, measured response to society's disdain for overt racism by disguising it as something else. It makes it difficult to call it what it actually is because they have removed the obvious polemics from the context.

Psychologically speaking, this would be termed as gas-lighting or ambient abuse. It's something that, when it is noticed, is hard to define because it is so nebulous. Still, it has a rather chilling if not altogether insidious effect. It charges the atmosphere with tension, revealing the motivations of those who use it but calling into question the perception of that revelation. It is psychological warfare for cowards; bigots and failures of men who without a cause to antagonize for, would be not worth their notice they've achieved. With so many other things to do, in this world, they chose something which is corrosive, divisive and insipid.

I really don't get how it's racist for them to wear the American flag, ************ of the holiday. If it was the Confederate flag, obviously that's racist, but if it's just an American flag... What's wrong with that =/

Maybe I missed something where they were asking the Mexican kids for their green cards or calling them racial slurs or something... but it seemed fine to me.

I think it's kind of stupid to wear an American flag shirt but I'm really not sure how they can get in trouble for it.

I feel like they can sue the school for this.

I think it's the fact that they did it as a group which indicates their intention. May 5 is considered by Mexican-Americans/Hispanics to not necessarily be a celebration of Mexico as a nation but as one of their heritage - where their ancestry comes from. The flag is a symbol of that unifying fact.

White people see the flag and hear the language and assume that it signifies an invasion. The boys in question weren't just wearing shirts but also wearing bandannas with the American flag on it - clearly mocking behavior. There were five of them, sitting together, and it's somewhat clear what the intention was; that it wasn't a happy accident that they all decided to wear similar clothing on the same day.

I'm not saying that they don't have a right to speak their peace but when it's clear that they're behavior is antagonistic towards others, however they might try to claim that it was otherwise, the school was right to ask them to leave.
