i don't think you can make the direct link between pirated software and lost sales. I would say most wouldn't even bother if there wasn't a crack. It wouldn't result in more sales for the company. The professional studios that do use them are probably 1 payment shy of bankruptcy.

As a student , I would encourage people to use cracked software. There is a steep learning curve and if you plan to work in a professional environment, you need to know these programs. The opportunity cost to wait till you can afford pretty much excludes you from doing music in a professional manner.

i agree somehow. if it wasnt for a friends pirated version of Reason i would probably never made a single track. i tried it because it didnt cost me anything and when i discovered what it could do for me i gathered the money and bought it later. piracy is some sort of promotion, just like with music.

Kits- right, and I say demo all you want - I'm not laying out $$$ before I've seriously taken that baby for a test drive.

But......I just don't like the "all software/music/intellectual property/design/art/creation/etc should be free" bullshit.

I'm not getting all bill gates about it, but some people put their heart, soul, talent and food money in to creating something for other people to enjoy or use so I think they should at least have some expectation of being rewarded for it, and since you need money to eat and pay rent, why not that?

Is there any way we can bring the Mac vs PC debate in to this thread, maybe if we mention that hackintosh's cause terrorism?

Could potentially be the most epic thread ever if we manage to get Crono, Robby and Richie properly involved.

Yeah, agreed.

Programmers need their money for sure, and its essential to pay them if they're going to innovate. Plus its worth it for the support you get from the developers.

Have you ever worked on a product for 4-5 month, dedicated all your time, put your heart and soul, and virtual sweat in it, and only to find out that it ends up on the internet? Please only say such statements when you have actually been through it otherwise its total BS. I can confirm that "cracks" indeed cause lost sales. Those of us who make soundsets know what Im talking about. Sure, its not software, but it can still end up on the internet. So it the same thing.

Its really ignorant to think that people who use cracks wouldnt have bought it anyway. When I have a product I have a steady sale, but as soon as it end up on the net the sales drop instantly and thats it. Say goodbye to your hard work. When people cant find the product on the internet, their only choice is to support the developer, but if they can find it on the www for free, they think, I can use the money for something else. No one is going to say, oh look there is this product here but I wouldnt have bought it anyway, it could be mine for free in a mouseclick, but I wont use it since I didnt buy it.

So saying something like people who use cracks wont anyway buy it, is a joke.

Happens all the time, its called open source. Everyone else just needs to get with the program.

No its not open source. You dont work on something, and you find out someone put it up on the internet. In open source YOU put it up on the internet. Dont blend the two.

Well surely it makes no difference if we think an individual downloads software. But when say 5000 people pirate the latest software from Image-Line, don't you think it will make a difference?

If you want to know what you're planning to buy, that's what demos of software are released for.

I'd see you'll pay for what you get, and get for what you pay.
Though it could just be my stone aged morals inherited from my parents born in the 50's.

And Aesthetic, is it really piracy to record shows from the tv or radio? I thought when you buy a medium (empty cd, dvd, or a freaking vhs or c-cassette), you've already paid a small copyright included in the price of the medium, allowing you to record from the tv or radio to your own personal use?

In some countries it is legal to copy commercial cds and dvds inside your family for your own personal use.

I'm not trying to push anyone to buy every software they use, as it really is none of business. But an opinion is what these kind of forums are for.

Also offtopicing the offtopic due to people expressing their opinions in a way that is far too familiar in this forum; let's just stop, I doubt this will make no difference in anyones behavior with their investments in software or anything downloadable on the net.

It is here in the Netherlands. However that does not cout for software. Just audio and video. As soon as the audio/video carrier has DRM of some kind and you alter that you are in violation of the law as well.
