I get what you're saying but I said KRK's (in general) over the BM5a's.

In fairness, the KRK's a little while ago were great value and cent monitors, but Yamaha and JBL both stepped it up, and I actually think it was due to KRK's partial dominance of the entry level studio monitor market.

I think the market for Rokits is mostly based on people like myself who bought them as a first set, and their ability far outstripped my own and still may do in a decent room!

The BM5a absolutely are lovely monitors

I also totally agree that it's a bit unfair to compare them because of the price. What I'm getting at is that monitors are a critical part of the studio and my belief is that it's better to save up a bit longer and get something quality. KRKs are not bad but I honestly think that with just a little bit more cash you can start to get much better monitors or even stuff like Dyns if you go for second hand. Yamaha is perfect example, they are going for next to nothing these days

I'm thinking about buying a pair of Mackie HR824mk2's or the original HR824's. I've also done some research on the Yamaha HS80M as Rann suggested and now I'm undecided about which to get. I have tested the Mackies and they sound GREAT. I haven't heard the Yamaha's but from the reviews I've read people say they are accurate. I'm tight for cash but eager to buy my first pair of monitors. I have saved almost enough to buy the Yamaha's but I lean more towards the Mackies for personal preference. Ive got the 824 mkIIs - i find them to be very nice even though get monumentally slated across the internet
Just make sure you have plenty of bass traps as these yokes put out a fair bit of low end

thing is i use a combination of my mackies, my dt880s, my hifi that has 9" subs, my ipod and my car to get my mixes sounding the way i want them

As long as you dont pick a complete turkey of a monitor then you should be able to mix ok on them

@amongthesavages - I would recommend treating your room for bass response if you havent already, will make any monitor you purchase sound much better.

I didn't get the mackies Craigslist girl said she that her boyfriend told her to not sell them. It was too good to be true at $400, now I'm going to hold off and either find another pair on craigslist or get them brand new. I haven't listened to any other mackies other than the MR8s and they sounded lovely to my ears.

I auditioned several monitors at a pro audio store today. Between the Mackie MR8's, JBL's, KRK, and Yamaha HS80M I found the Yama's to be the truth. Though I have heard the Mackie HR824's and they sounded amazing, i'm on a low budget and the Yama's will accomplish everything I want. So I think I'm going to purchase them soon. I can't wait. Thank you all for the input.

Great that you went out an took the time to have a listen for yourself. Yamaha's are (in my opinion) a great choice in that price range.
