lol sorry if I came across abit harsh. Of course you need skill. If you can't beatmatch without a bpmcounter, you can't beatmatch at all IMO, totally agree with you, but all I'm saying is in the end if writing down the bpms (for instance) on your sleeves helps you perform better... I say do it!

true, only to a certain degree though... if you rely on bpm counters and other tools to help you beatmatch, you will suck when thrown in front of mixers w/out bpm counters and will wreck your set... so if you are commited to learning to mix, you should stop using or even thinking about using bpm counters...

thx for everyone that helps me to understand the beatmatch .. but there is one thing that bug me .. i read several ppl reply that they tried to beatmatch 2 songs for 10-30 secs .. i wondered do i need to beatmatch for that kind of long ? coz 30 secs is indeed very long and its hard to beatmatch for that long.

Thx, LeVouS

Essentially yes you need to have them beatmatched for that long, and yes it is a long time...just listen to the music and you will notice how much as changed, but if you have them beatmatched correctly they will not ver off. So if you have them beatmatched correctly then that thirty seconds will seem to short cause you have to figure out how you are goin to bring the next track in and make the transition. I hope that this helped you some.

Peace

well, it depends on the type of transition you're going to do. Some times a quick cross fade will sound great and you hardly need to beatmatch for a long time, but if for example you're spinning progressive, 2 or 3 minute long transitions are quite common.

30 secs may seem long but I'm telling you, in a few months you'll be pulling of longer beatmaches, learning as you practise.

if you have two tracks *perfectly* beatmatched you could have them playing together for the entire song lentgh if the beats start to drift after a while, say 30 secs, this means you do not have both tracks entirely beatmatched. Which isn't always a problem, because a 30 second transition can sound just as great as a five minute one. in the end it's all about the music.

Let me ask you this while we're on the subject of beatmatching.

Have you ever had those times where you're cueing a song, you listen and beatmatch till you are confident that they are matched then when the time comes to finally drop the track, you can't get the the beats lined up? lol

It sounds kinda funny but sometimes that happens, it's like I lose concentration or I'm just anxious and it causes me to be out of phase....I guess that's why I still have alot to learn!

Back to the subject...
For about the first 9 months of spinning, I could always beat match, it would take me a majority of the song to do it but usually I would end up with them matched, of course I miss alot too. Now being at the 1 year mark, I can match them up usually in the first minute or so. I'm always listening for possible fine-tuning though and the 1 minute isn't always the case, sometimes I do struggle. Some songs have a faint bass or they have so many highs that it's hard to focus on the beat to match them, therefor sometimes it takes me longer.

One thing I do know is once you get the hang of it, your love for dj'ing will increase! You will realize that it is not impossible and with hard work you will go further!!!
