Why does every trance producer think that they're so original?

Using a Nord instead of a Virus, or a Jupiter 8 instead of a SH101 is NOT the difference between being original and sounding like everyone else.

[phone rings]

Randy: Hello

Brad [Label A&R]: Randy, hey it's Brad, how's it going, man?

Randy: Great! Hey did you get our band's demo for "Rockin' Down the Highway"?

Brad: yeah, I did, that's why I'm calling. We love the song and think it's got potential to hit the Top 40, but it's got a few major issues that I wanted to discuss.

Randy: oh. Really? What....what sort of...issues?

Brad: well, it's the guitars. They sound great, but it sounds like you recorded the lead with a Les Paul, and the rhythm with a Stratocaster, both through Marshall amps.

Randy: yeah, that sounds about right. What's the problem?

Brad: well, our audience is pretty tired of those sounds. They're more into Gibson SGs and Telecasters recorded through Mesa-Boogies these days.

Randy: Oh, I see.

Brad: yeah, so if you could just go buy some new guitars and amps and re-record the guitar tracks, we'll sign the song and you'll be rich.

Randy: OK, cool. We can do that. Hey, what did you think of the melody?

Brad: never heard of it. Is it some sort of instrument?

Randy: no man, it was, ya know, the part I was singing...

Brad: oh, I didn't really notice. But, hey buddy, I gotta run - re-record those guitars and we'll talk.

Timbre is extremely important in pop music. It has to sound like it all goes together, so this is completely plausible.

A good carpenter knows which tools to blame.

I can't find a facepalm image big enough for this statement. Timbre is important in ANY music. That's not the point.

You need a lot of samples and synths so that you can find out which sounds fit together.
