After a wild night of sleazy beats at Stereo on Friday.... regardless of how tired I was... I was ready and needed more Steve Lawler. I loved his intro... made me get that dark grimy “Lights out” feeling once again to get things going. Then, Lawler drops his typical big room base beat.... carried that through... slowed it down, creeped up the build... gradually picked up the tempo, in comes a bit of that sweet Lawler tribal infusion, the crowd erupts as the beat just drops again, and we were off... to me it kind of felt like a smooth transition from Stereo the night before. Then for the last hour he kind of went up and down, but he didn’t quite lose me. Until, in the last 15-20 minutes, he plays that weird sounding electro song (which is near the end of the Ibiza Opening set). Buzz kill. Everyone around me kind of didn’t know what to think. He tried to pick it up a bit again after that, but I had given up then. The song was so out of place (much how I feel about it in the Ibiza set as well). He finished it off at 4 (2 hours, meh... glad I got the four the night before). Off to the Skybar we went. Based on the past two years I wasn’t quite sure what to expect.....
Enjoyed the bounciness of Darius & Nyra much better then what they played in the main room. Then Steve slides on to the decks, with a huge smile on his face, reading to deliver the goods. With a groovy start to his set, the sound was quite low... started to get a bit worried that it would be like the couple years past. A few songs in, the tempo is picking up, sun is rising, build up... bam. Crank up the volume.... Skybar Lawler was back and he didn’t let up. Sexy bouncy beats, A-game Lawler day time styles. Every so often he dropped a bit of that winding sleazy sound that goes so well with the unique vibe of a proper sunrise morning outdoor party. The Skybar was not packed as it usually is (Thank you for keeping this party off of Canada Day). So much more bearable than in the past. In no means will I ever up the legendary Sasha/Lawler Skybar set in 2005; but I will say that I haven’t enjoyed the music as much upstairs since that glorious morning. (2007 was also a good one).
Lawler was loving it... feeding the crowd what they wanted to hear, getting the reception he wanted, so he continued down the path of daytime Lawler delightfulness. Sunrise session 2010 truly made up for the sour taste that was left in my mouth at the conclusion of his set in the main room.
As mentioned previously, Lawler is not for everyone. You love him or hate him. This past weekend’s Lawler marathon proves to me why I will always continue to support him.
The CD was great.... Respect for putting that together.
