"The Complete Joy of Homebrewing" by Charlie Papazian is a good reference for this kind of thing, although obviously aimed more at the home brewer.

Or check out this page from a prominent commercial wheat beer brewery in Germany which explains that the beer is bottled when young and then matured in the bottle, which is common. Of all beer styles wheat beers have among the shortest of maturation periods in the barrel, which makes this claim of 18 months all the more ludicrous.

You will find countless other references through Google.

I think it's an amazing beer with an amazing story. For a beer of it's size it is eminently drinkable with superb body and complex flavour. It is often thought to be a beer that benefits from age but I find it underrated while young.

There are a number of other beers I like almost as much though.

Thanks.
Never tried it before but I'll keep it mind.

I think brewers are under-qualified Pharmacists.

Oh, im just talking out of my arse, but you havent provided anything that would lead us to believe you’re a brewing expert.

The Westvleteren can be quite hard to track down but there are a couple of other beers that are close enough and should be a lot easier to find.

St Bernardus 12 is very close, brewed to a very similar or perhaps identical recipe at a brewery only a couple of miles away.

Also Rochefort 10, which LAdazeNYnights mentioned, is a truly excellent beer in a similar mould.

My current favourite tipple is Sneck Lifter brewed by Jennings.

What other ales like this divine drink would you recommend?

hell yeah on stone! stone brewery is one of my 'happy places' hahaha. i've only visited a couple breweries thus far (stone, brooklyn, and dogfishhead) but stone is just an incredible place to relax and enjoy a long weekend day. They distribute for a lot of smaller breweries from the west coast so they always have the most incredible tap and bottle selection.
