I agree in the sense that I love how this place is very straightforward and open. One doesn't need to sugarcoat his/her opinions or posts in any way unlike in so many other boards with far stricter moderation policy.

Then again there are people who really, really, really, really need to get off their high horse. It's just so very tiresome when you know exactly what certain people post even before you click on the thread. Then again, nobody's forcing us to read their posts in the first place...

I'm going to express this even though I'm drunk out of my mind at the moment. I know your post isn't directed at me, but here goes. What you (yes even you Nic) view as high horse is in very many cases is NOT high horsery. It's just a difference in opinion. I more or less understand the definition of high horse as people expressing their opinion in a defensive manner. It's not that fucking bad.

Did we define high horsery? :P

No one is forcing anyone to read anything, but I like this place. I do not want to have to read garbage after garbage every time I'm here. You get this yes?

Too many threads in here degenerate into pure flame wars. Since my time on TA, browsing the Music Discussion and posting occasionally, I've witnessed maybe 3 threads foster an interesting discussion. The most recent of these that comes to mind would be the thread where nefardec and a few other posters argued over the term 'Detroit Techno' as it relates to a certain artist. I can't remember who. I learned a good deal reading that thread--but it eventually fell into flames.

It's always funny when a new member comes on and asks for music recommendations. If I see one of those threads before there are responses I laugh so hard. I can't help it. I think that's a shame because - yeah, they should've just used the search button and could've simply browsed some threads but still, it's a fair question. It is completely baffling, as you noted, how much time people spend on their negative (and utterly useless) responses. Looking solely at threads of newbies asking for recommendations this becomes apparent.

I don't think I've ever created a thread in Music Discussion because I think the flaming is worse than it is in the cor- in the sense that, when I post in the cor people will actually, occasionally, make constructive responses. Other times they'll respond with complete shenanigans but it's better than the elitist sentiment the underlines every thread in the Music Discussion.

I'd like to ask for recommendations - but I know better than that. That's what I'm trying to say. I'm much newer to the trance scene than a lot of the posters on here, obviously, and have been very open to discovering new stuff. I've even seen my tastes evolving a great deal over the last year to encompass other genres of EDM that I'm sure I could gain a lot more out if I had friends who listened as well or if people on here were more willing to be constructive.

The other day I was looking at some older threads on TA (through a thread on DJ/Producer drama on TA) and it seemed as though - as recently as 2008 - the mods would let threads go on but after a page or two flames, perhaps more though, they'd say something along the lines of "this thread had potential to be very interesting, but you guys have ruined it. closed"
Maybe they should start doing that again. It'd be too time consuming, I'm sure.

As well, if you read threads on TA from the first few years, you'll find that people were a lot friendlier. Those on other (much smaller) sites/forums, often talk about how TA is full of negative ppl or whatever - based on some of the replies people dole out in MD it's understandable to see that. What I see it as being is more so human nature that as something grows people want to carve out their own little niche/identity so as to not get lost in the shuffle -- for some, they accomplish this by being self-righteous pricks wherever necessary --- which unfortunately often scares off those with something legitimate to say (because they figure they'll get flamed regardless).

This was one reason we got rid of post counts a long time ago...but then people started being judged (as edm n00bs) based on their registration date instead, lol.

It's funny though - pretty much all of the TAs I've met at events/shows/whatever have been incredibly nice. That's probably the one reason why I don't mind all of the negativity here. Then again, a lot of the people I've met/befriended from TA here on the west coast are the ones that don't really engage a lot in forum discussion - just use it to connect for shows. I remember going up to SF to see Markus with 2 TAs, meeting up with 3 other TAs and all heading to Ruby Skye together. When we were inside one of the people I was with pointed out "oh that xxxxx from TA maybe we should say hi." A couple of us decided not to because he was one of the most argumentative people in the west coast forums but the part of our group that did say hi found him to be nice - he even helped them to get on stage.

Another example of this - I met, albeit somewhat briefly, Bas, Clovis, and Idoru - all are personalities on here to say the least. They were nice though - Idoru especially - and I remember him saying to me after I told him I was newer to TA "you'll see...everybody's just an ass hole on there..but we're actually nice people"

I'm sure you've had similar experiences. But then again, a lot of the most virulent posts on here come from members that don't really go meet up with others I'd think. When I first joined I briefly succumbed to the destructive attitude in one or two threads I remember - but once I met some people and found how nice they were I felt so stupid. I wouldn't want such nice people to think of me as a dick and avoid me at shows or whatever. Since then I've tried to be constructive on here and not try to step on too many peoples toes ha.
