I don't think anyone has tried this hard. This is an EDM night, Friday's will be TOP 40 based. I agree 2 EDM nights would not work.

What are your plans for when university is out?

You have about 20,000 people in the 19-30 age range that live in the KW area. You have to find some way to get that population to visit your club. It will be difficult when only a small portion of that population is actually going to be going out on any given friday or saturday.

Ever heard of students taking courses over the summer. Thousands of students either stay on campus or move back to KW during the summer. The population in the Kitchener, Waterloo & Cambridge area is 450,000... I would think your estimate of 20,000 is a little off.

Keep being negative ChemEnhanced... that's one thing you're good at.

I think he was talking about specific demographics of age group... Though 20,000 seems a bit low. Student body pop of UW, Laurier and Conestoga gotta be bigger than that? Add Guelph to this mix?

Call me a pessimist too, but hard to argue with preference a lot of people would rather party in Toronto than KW area. More options, plus not that far of a drive

I'd like to see an EDM club make a niche in KW area, but getting 300 people out regularly is always going to be an uphill battle in KW

Furthermore, can you name a club that has actually properly invested in the venue, a proper lineup and marketed properly.

As Steve Angello recently said commercial music and EDM are on a collision course and the result will be called music.

Things are changing, I have never seen a venue in Waterloo invest any money or create a proper venue.

Anyways, I do honestly thank you for your well wishes. BTW, Purple room is a room not a club

Mmmm...all good stuff until that. As cool as it is that you are re-doing the bringing in big acts (and that it surely is), perhaps that attitude is not the right one to have. A million light effects an awesome club does not make (doesn't hurt though).

Yeah, Steve Angello is in large part correct wrt the loads of crappy EDM being spewed out every day. So are the number of people who like it, the ones who love it and the ones who despise it. It's becoming more pop, but that's not = to there not being a ton of EDM that doesn't fall into that category. There are some that value that so while it's great that there is another club that you yourself are pretty much saying ^ is going to "BE" ( ) top40 mashups, doesn't mean the places that don't go in that direction are NOT good EDM (one could easily argue against that). Not gonna argue that one's better than the other, just saying, a little respect for those of us who prefer what PR used to be great for and now is again. Beta is going to attract a certain crowd and that crowd will undoubtedly be large whether it be people who don't know the difference between what is traditionally (but never unanimously) liked around here and DJ Danny D, or even the purists who just like the club itself.

Absolutely Beta is going to be a great atmosphere, just like Tabu was. Just like Tabu though, the best nights there were when there was an EDM artist and/or Kurtbradd didn't have to play 9 Deadmau5 tracks. He's an awesome DJ, and it was great when you could see he was playing out, not following a prescription. PR has been awesome the past few Fridays BTW (I'm being as unbiased as possible) for the reasons it used to. A sense of connection, that's its charm. No reason why they can't co-exist. IMO they serve different interests. May be a "room", but it's an f'in fun one when it's going. Also, someone's bedroom can be a club (insert joke). It's about what's going on there. Focus less on the hype and how much bigger and better you are and you guys will do well.

It'll be interesting to see whether Beta falls prey to the university town tug of war between getting the maximum admittance vs. being relevant to the majority of TA on a consistent basis. It's not easy. Luckily, as Dan said, people like "house". What you take that to mean (on non-headlining nights) remains to be seen. I'm sure most of the people in this thread (myself included) are going to check it out. Give us a reason to keep coming back?

PS. Glenn Morisson was also my favourite act at Tabu. That was a disgustingly good set.

just as long as any EDM club in Walkerton...but at least we can drink the water here

even if the estimate is actually off its not off by much when you are looking at an age group of about 6 years. You still didn't answer how you expect to get through the tough summer time.....its been a problem for all clubs in KW...not just EDM.

You may think I'm being negative but I'm just passing on problems that myself and friends had when trying to run an EDM club in KW.

Exactly...there is just too much working against the area for there to be any long term success. Not only are you competing with the other bars in town....look at the Stampede....its packed every saturday night with university students but you are also competing with Toronto. I think the EDM crowd is more likely to make the short trip to Toronto to see various international DJs then to stay in KW and see Toronto area DJs.

Having the EDM night on Saturdays is probably not the best idea either...I think fridays would probably work out better. One of the biggest problems is getting that person who likes EDM to come when his/her other friends would rather hit up the top 40 club.

Purple Room is the ideal thing for the KW area....it gives a place for the EDM crowd to go but their non-edm friends can go listen to top 40 in the big room. I just wish the purple room was larger and I wish they would try bringing in some international DJs to that location.

how bout i give the opinion of someone who actually is a student in the KW area at Laurier. from the time i started at Laurier til now I've seen the amount of people who like EDM grow exponentially and I can personally say that a lot (NOT ALL) of people are converting and getting bored of the regular bar and club scene here. I think Beta will be successful because they are doing something different than anyone else. Beta will have its night for top 40 people and its night for house. I don't see how it will be very hard to get 300 people out every saturday here in Waterloo. I know laurier already has like 15,000 + students and I can already vouch for at least 15 people who are stoked and ready to hit up Beta every saturday. I agree it will be hard, especially in the summer, but I think you guys are playing too much into the fact that nothing's ever really succeeded here. Dance music has never been as big as it is now, even if some of those fans are ignorant of what real underground house music is. all they really caer about is filling the club while having great dj's spin and i'm sure it won't be too difficult with the great Toronto and INTL talent they're booking so far.

HOW ABOUT, we all wait until it ACTUALLY opens and save our judgments for when we've actually been there and let it speak for itself. No point in bickering over if it will work or not, because so far, its still even a month before it opens its doors.

plus the student size at Laurier has been growing every year for the past 8 years and will continue to do so. every single bar on every weekend nights has been absolutely RAMMED this year. i don't think it will be too difficult finding people, even if its purely EDM

What makes you so confident? Didn't Taboo tried to do EDM nights recently and failed miserably?

I find EDM crowd very... specific in their taste of music. Very hard to please everyone. You have one bad night, or you play music not to taste of someone, and you probably won't see that person again. Hard to find a crowd that is open minded, and willing to give a club more than one chance in KW. (esp when they can spend their money in Toronto for more known quality of clubbing) And I'm going to slit my throat if I see one more commercial house based club in KW. (and that's about the most popular EDM music in KW area)

Srsly. I'd kill to see a good trance or prog based club in KW.
It's not that we don't want EDM club to succeed in KW area. It's just hard to argue against record of failed clubs in KW area.

(For the record, I go to UW, though not recently attending classes due to work) and somewhat well informed of EDM scene in KW area

i wouldn't say they failed miserably, i went there on a few of their nights. the difference with tabu is that they didn't promote their club the way beta is. tabu was just a regular club with two different nights, one of which happened to be house music (someties). these guys went through this once and didn't get it right thats why i think they'll have more success this time around. i think they're actually trying to cater to the EDM crowd and care more about making a good club night. with the dj's they're bringing im gonna say they'll make decent money and be able to keep it runnin. i want to see this place succeed and i know i'll be out every weekend to make that possible, as should you. i'm not tryin to be confrontational or anything, i really just wanna save money from going back to Toronto every other weekend
