I tried to warn you this would happen but none of you listened!

Don't be so neutral, you're messing the whole system up!

That movie was kind of cool when I first watched it but now it's cool to go "ugh" whenever anyone mentions it. And it's cool to hate on The Secret lol. Fucking hipsters, I have the secret on vinyl. Anyway I won't believe or not believe Emoto's work until it's been empirically refuted.

Is being happy all the time good for you?

This stuff makes my blood boil. I was shown "What the Bleep" by someone trying to convince my logical, scientific mind to believe this shit. It's all bullshit! I remember reading how Emoto selectively chose water molecules in those tests; which equates it to an elaborate art project. I'll try to dig up a link if anyone cares.

It's such a step backward for humanity to believe this pseudo-science new age shit.

The Secret falls into the same category (my avatar is a 'shopped version of the cover). A kid asking the universe for a bike, and it magically appearing? WTF? Not to mention, I see that some of those same authors made followup books "The Key", "The Power", and various other sequels to the original. Can't people see what a money grab that is? My theory is people enjoy the feeling of "positivity" they get when reading it, despite never seeing results. It's like masturbation, and it doesn't solve anything, except make you feel good for a while. It becomes a problem where people say "oh someone cured their cancer by using the secret, so fuck any any other treatment".

What the film makers didn’t say is that Emoto knows the word used, and looks for a crystal that matches that word (biased data selection). To demonstrate a real effect, Emoto would need to be blind to the word used.

About the rice thing: Why is rice rotting a bad thing? Bacteria, fungi and such represent new life, new beginnings. I would say that's a good thing, except from the limited human perspective of not being able to eat it anymore.

Obligatory post:

And you think the Secret was bad? Wait until you read about... The Power! That's a funny essay criticising both books, by the way.

Which is what I want to do with my gullible mother. Naturally, my "experiment" is far from perfect, but I've got even a control group and there's some blindness involved

I reckon I just need loads of sterilised and sealed bottles to make the analysed amount great enough in order to make a tongue-in-scientifical study

And these hippies coming to the conclusion that, as I said previously, life develops on hate.

Isn't it magical?

i read in one scientific journal an article on neurology that said the same thing: if you think happy thoughts, you will become happy. each thought has specific effect, etc. etc

So, in a separate article I found in another journal, there was a statistical study done from volunteers that were picked and separated into two groups: sad or grumpy or melancholic in general attitude in one, and happy and optimistic in the other. It was found that, after a series of tests were done by the subjects, those people that are “happy” did consistently worse in their final results than those people of a melancholic disposition.

conclusion: being happy all the time makes you stupid.

2nd conclusion: scientists are out to makes yous stupid.

3rd conclusion: thinking happy thoughts will not make your life any better.

its foolish science. science that's not aware of its own bias. there's some emerging thing called "Happiness Studies" that's being pushed a serious area of study.

Nova released this documentary on dreams recently where modern science "debunked" Freud. Freud aside, statistically they noticed a correlation between negative dreams and REM sleep. optimistic dreams tended to occur during non-REM sleep. one of the solutions they offered was to decrease or stop the amount of REM sleep people have to prevent depression.

lol

shit like this is everywhere. reminds me of Huxley's Brave New World

Unfortunately when research like that hits the mainstream something bad happens, as best explained by this comic:

The general public will never understand the difference between correlation and causality.

That aside, I bet given the required instrumentation I could actually prove "scientifically" that Trance makes you happy and Techno makes you depressed.

I remember reading about smiling makes you happy, frowning makes you sad, from "Blink" by Malcolm Gladwell. Anyway, IIRC, some people tried mapping all facial expressions into the emotion or feeling it represents, and they found that while doing these sad or angry faces, they would actually feel drained or depressed. It was an interesting study, and I believe companies like Pixar use their research when animating their movies.

Don't know how true this is, but either way it's not "crazy" in any way.
