Because it's actually trance. Most of what you would call trance isn't actually trance.
I'll use the song that got me into classic trance...
This is sort of an in-betweener song from classic trance and epic/anthem trance. 1:12...that's what separates real trance from bad trance. It's not a hard musical technique...it just drove most trance tracks pre-1995 instead of a big melody. It's called an arpeggio. It was a technique used heavily to add and "entrancing" effect to trance music. Unfortunately, very large numbers of people do not listen to music driven by a monotone arpeggio, therefore the music called trance was transformed into this...
Now that's an epic melody there. Add a breakdown, and there you have some anthem trance. It's arpeggiated so i'd call it trance, but you notice how the bassline is limp and changes pitch to augment the melody...the total focus of the song is on the higher pitched melody. The goal was to give the track an "epic" or "uplifting" feeling, but to me it just comes off cheesy.

Because it actually took some originality to produce instead of dependence on technology.

No way, really?
Is it cause I posted some Tiesto songs?
By the way, other good classics are:
Gouryella - 1998
Gouryella - Gouryella
Art of Trance - Madagascar
The Mystery - Forgiven

Dont criticize music from a period of time whereby you've barely even bothered to spend time to find any decent tunes with an open-minded perspective. Making references to Paul Van Dyk's early works shows you barely give a shit in your course to do so or you either haven't grown any pubes yet.
You say simple melodies in trance classics are primitive. I find them alot easier to remember and conveys the meaning of the track more effectively. Is that why producers/DJ's these days run out of ideas too quickly only to find themselves remixing old tunes all over again eh?
Watered down. We are talking about the state of a genre that is widely and officially accepted as the "golden-era". The very success that led itself to its own bastardization by try hard producers who constantly fail in their attempts to reinvent the essence of Trance.
If old trance fails that much in order to be considered watered down I'm pretty sure the "golden era" title would automatically become reclaimed back to its respected position today. However unfortunately for you, your obnoxious tastes in Trance music in comparison to the ratio of historic success of the genre from that point in time, bringing that title back would be about as possible as fisting the end of a needle. Watering something down is a process which follows the chronological order of time (in this case Success moving down towards Failure), not backwards, you fucksocket.
Rougher production qualities. In other words, all you need is advanced up to date ableton/fruityloops/whatever shitty production software filled with clichéd presets to make that modern sounding Trance tune with those mega high quality crisp sounds and reverberated X 50,000 vocals made in an hour like a cheese factory for that next gig unicorn laser gig instead of some good old inspiration. You’re an insult to music in general. Fuck off.
It is sad indeed when those clean, innocent rainforests are bulldozed constantly, just like the way technology (abused) and the ever growing hunger for profit fucked the meaning of Trance music. Pull your head out your ignorant, arrogant arse and accept it.
Dude, I am totally jealous of your ability to wax so poetically.
I couldn't agree with your post more.

No, it's because you seem to think your favourites = classics even when some of the tracks have aged terribly or were awful to begin with.
I also find it a bit amusing you consider these tracks classics yet don't care enough to get the performers right (Gouryella didn't make 1998)
Download the Armin's ASOT 1-250 pack for a good history of it all, will keep you busy for MONTHS, its was allot more progressive than it is now, no cheap builds/long builds/repetitive melodies.
Some amazing synth sound design going on in the sets too.
There still great stuff being created now just have to look a little harder.
