No, because he annoyed the mods and Swamper with his 'noia.

I was pulling too many all-nighters back then. Even though I still spend the occasional night studying, my body is so knackered it doesn't let me stay up for too long in the following evening

Meh, I've never spend a night working. Never longer than 1 a.m. I think, and even that only one or two times. If studying means actual work and effort for you then you're doing it wrong!

Fun fact: I'm more or less seriously considering to study medicine after my PhD. Maybe that'll involve all-nighters. Worst thing is that it's probably only because it find House M.D. so great.

You know, I never ever understood what the appeal is. It's so... repetitive: it always follows these 5 steps...

  1. Patient has strange disease - usually, the scenes are shot so the person you focus on is not the one that will be sick;
  2. A subplot marginally related to the plot unfolds;
  3. House and the young turks make one mistake after another;
  4. Subplot gives House an epiphany;
  5. Case solved.
I can count on my fingers the episodes that doesn't fit this pattern, and even the variations are all too subtle (in one episode I guess Chase was the one that had the epiphany, not House).

Even ER had a more diverse plot (mainly because the patients were just incidental to the story).

I agree I find House plot boring and predictable. His shock appeal has worn off and I no long watch it. Bad idea picking a career based what you see on tv, like Hollywood in any way accurately portrays real life.

Were you a regular watcher? Because I would've thought you'd liked the show. Aside from the appeal of House's character, it's a very well written show that incorporates many philosophical issues and handles them very well.

I've just finished the 3rd season

My sister is a hardcore fan of the series, and it's hard not to watch it when I visit my parents (though I only began to pay attention to it last month). My friends from grad school also talk about the show regularly, and I thought it'd be a nice case study as I want to understand what it is about fiction that gets people so interested in obviously unreal narratives. For example, why do people watch "Friends".

"In Treatment", which is a rather unpopular series I thoroughly enjoyed, has plausible characters and - according to a friend of mine who happens to be a therapist - each and everyone of the patients were prototypes, so to speak. It is, however, too "real" to become popular I believe.

"House MD", on the other hand, focuses on a larger-than-life doctor who's a rebel genius: he speaks more languages than I wish I could, has an encyclopaedic knowledge about pretty much everything (purposefully making mistakes to mock the situation, such as the time when he said "Copernicus was killed by the Vatican"), and apparently has a very deep and simple insight into the human condition.

The "Everybody lies" motto is a great way of exploring how hypotheses change when you work in real life with a limited (and often incorrect) amount of information, though instead of making "inferences to the best explanation" (which is what scientists do in real life), House MD always makes "inferences to the most unlikely yet interesting explanation".

And, though my gloomy humanism is just a cynical twist away from a full-blown misanthropy like House's, I really don't think the show portrays the human condition in a philosophically pertinent way. Rather than delivering deep insights about human nature, it aims to make us feel better about ourselves through the devaluation of others (people suck, therefore I shouldn't feel bad about my shortcomings either).

Even the medinice doesn't seem to be so accurate, though the medical consultancy does make it more plausible.

You're basically right. Can't argue against House being repetitive. But so what? Taste is not something rational that's based on hard facts about a shows objective values. I like it for what it is. Or rather was, before they started with all this drama shit. Should have stayed the same repetitive crap forever imho. Because it works. And I like that.

Who's talking about a career? I'm talking about a degree that I think will be fun.

Also, has anyone noticed that next week's patient looks like w_ashley? And you're seriously telling me this show is not awesome?!

Edit: Is this the coolest back-to-thread-topic move you've ever seen or what?

Edit2: Seriously Lira, you think too much. You should develop a weed or alcohol addiction just to stop that for some time. Just enjoy thinks without thinking about them. Listen to Eurodance, for example!
