Never been to Wrongbar till last night, but I always liked hanging out in Parkdale, wicked down to earth music loving crowd.
I had been listening to some of Anja's stuff on line prior to the night to get a feel of what I might get to hear and honestly wasnt expecting to be blown away or all that impressed because my techno tastes are very VERY particular these days, and the youtube videos were not making me feel her much.
Last minute, I ended up being designated driver, so my expectations of the night downward spiraled, and i wasnt really looking forward to much.
I smoked a joint (which I never do), chugged a few red bulls, and started to listen to her just as she got on.
WOW......serious busines this lady was.......the sound I heard I could call a fusion of proggy, happy tech, with a dash of minimal.
For not drinking anything, or being under the influence of anything other than some bad weed, this sound kept me bouncing for the better part of the night, which hasnt happened to me in a LONG FUCKING TIME.
She lost me a few times with some tracks that are just too minimal for my liking, lacking soul or flavour, jsut too boring, but imediately redeemed herself, always playing a great track to follow the few boring ones she dropped.
The music had house soul, techno foundation, and progressive highlights. I dont hear much techno these days, but thats my interpretation of what made me dance.
One of my best nights out in a while and it had the weakest expectations of any party ive been to in the last year at least.
Anja is def worth checking out, I think the small venue always makes a DJ play and sound better than the big room stuff I watched on youtube for the hype.
PS, FUCKING SOUND SYSTEM! WOAH, perfection.
PSS, Terrance Kissner is always top notch, perfect opening DJ for her.
