I used to live up that way and have done the wine trail. There are a lot of decent everyday wines from small wineries. They certainly aren't the best in the world and you aren't going to impress anyone but they do just fine for an informal meal at home. Their affordability allows for you enjoy wine on a regular basis without breaking the bank.

Do you find it hard to find Finger Lakes wines in NYC? My brother lives in Brooklyn and always stocks up on Thirsty Owl dry riesling every time he comes home just because he can never find it in NYC.

The wine expo is on my birthday every year! In my limited experience, I've found the most interesting and flavourful wines come from Australia and New Zealand. Love their booths up every year at the expo.

New Zealand make slightly better whites IMO, since their climate is better suited for growing those kinds of grapes, but there have been some fantastic wines (both white and red) coming out of Australia for a long time now.

Check out wines from the Hunter Valley and Margaret River regions here, they're among the best around.
