All the highways and train bridges/elevated railways were built to sustain a large a quake. Not at all compared to a lot of parts of Seattle or Tacoma.

The past 10-15 years even the east coast of the US started enforcing Siesmic standards for developing buildings except not as strict as the main earth quake regions. At least technology is finally catching up with the forces of nature.

Hope for the best

Apparently the entire Pacific Rim is currently under a Tsunami watch, at the least.

This type of stuff is always so surreal and saddening.

Yea, modern buildings are fine, but a lot of our other infrastructure, bridges, tunnels, etc, are very old and not up to the same codes and standards. The Alaskan Way Viaduct in Seattle is a big concern, since viaducts like that one collapsed in Oakland and Kobe and killed many people.

Yea, I am hearing that the whole Pacific basin is under watch at the moment. Even if a 1m wave gets there at high tide it could be fairly dangerous.

You've just got to believe that they are. My parents best friends son was in New York when 9/11 hit and it was 2 days before they got news that he was ok with phonelines and chaos that ensued. I can't imagine what they must've felt because he was working downtown nearby.

It will take about 20 hours to get there, apparently.

If anyone is still worried about Lira, I realized just now he had sent me his fiances phone number if anyone wants to try and contact him. I am sure he is fine though.

Send her a quick text mate. I'm sure he's fine, but better to know for sure, right?
