I think that almost all religions are, in their root, good. When people begin to justify their life choices using religion, or look particularly close at one small part of a religion instead of grasping the larger concepts it seems as though religion is idiotic, shortsighted, and evil mysticism. When, the real overall message of most religions seems to be love, forgiveness and an open mind. This is entirely contrary to how most people who practice a religion seem to act and that is sad because religion has a lot of great insights to offer.

People will always be able to poke holes in a religious belief that seems exclusive and I know that I will be looked down upon for "playing devils advocate" (hehehe) on this topic. But, the one positive thing about religion is that it is in essence about love, forgiveness, understanding and the shortcoming is that it must be viewed by an individual with a perspective and agenda. Usually even taught to the masses by individuals with very strong and non-altruistic agendas.

btw, the guy that claimed the Japanese deserved it is a fucktard, you can't do anything but feel sorry for people that have that much hatred in their lives. The reason I use religion is as a tool to find compassion which is how I remain more or less consistently happy about life. I would never use it to explain science, but that's just because I see it as a tool to understanding human interaction and not as a way to look down on others.

I haven't read the thread but I feel compelled to address the OP.

Marcus, here are my humble 2 cents just for the sake of discussion and/or maybe to offer a new perspective:

Firstly I have to say I think it's a good thing that you have such a strong opinion on such a complex/controversial "world issue". Personally, I would never be able to have a such a distinct conviction about something of such an enormous scale and bound by so many views, so I have to commend you on that.

That said, I always seem to feel slightly confused and even a bit saddened when I hear someone speaking of "ditching tolerance". I'm a strong believer of something along the lines of "I think everyone should have the right to believe and follow whatever they want (even after they have been exposed to the facts) as long as they aren't hurting anyone". All I care about is that people ARE exposed to, in this case scientific, facts. I view tolerance as a way of the future because, the way I see it, who am I to judge? By no means am saying you have a big ego and feel the need to do so, I am just blurting out the way I would see a situation similar to yours.

Ignorance is ignorance, its context is irrelevant. Chances are the person you are speaking of would say something similarly ill-informed given the chance to, even if everyone in the world including her was an atheist. Creed is a very intimate thing. I know this because I grew up going to church twice a week through most of my childhood. I'm not religious or even "spiritual" now, but being in there for such a long time I have learned to respect it in others and sometimes just let the ignorance roll off my back when it is addressed at me. Some people just don't care enough to be exposed to something else, that's when it becomes their problem and not mine. So I come back to the "who am I to judge?" or "who am I to DICTATE what people believe in or don't believe in?" . I'm not trying to be a goody two-shoes or "promote" world peace, but we're all stuck in this world together. People should be trying to fight less and tolerate more. When it comes to things like this the fighting is endless and it just gets progressively worse.

I respect people trying to open other people's eyes or whatever the motive is, but fact is that creed is so intimate to some that it's just impossible. How does that differ you from someone trying to convert you into their creed? Just because you have scientific evidence to support your conviction, it doesn't mean your intentions are any more noble then theirs. If we can all co-exist believing in different things, why not?
