I took a psych class last year...here's what I remember: When you go into REM sleep (when your eyes move around and you have vivid dreams), you get a boner. I'm not totally sure, but I think that it has to do with keeping the blood vessels down there healthy and happy. I don't think that you get a boner everytime you get into REM sleep. That's redicilous. However it does have something to do with blood. When you're sleeping you are usually in horizontal posture (unless you're a bat). The heart doesn't need to pump as hard to overcome gravity and also when you get into complete rest your heart beat drops even further. When you wake up, your heart rate ascends drastically and with it your blood flow, making you extremely sensitive (and of course we are horniest in the morning so that helps too).

BTW if you are in a situation where a boner might be embarassing, just jump out of bed as soon as you open your eyes, and start dressing up or something that will take your mind off your johnson.
