Hence why I said Facebook Chat counts as instant messaging. I suppose it's natural people move from dedicated IM clients to Facebook Chat over time, because it's all centralized. But it's just a different form of private instant messaging, really. Everyone still uses it, because if you need to talk to someone, and you either don't have their phone number and/or they're online, you're going to have to use a service of this kind.
Whereas people just don't use group chats as much, despite the fact it's still available, but clearly group Facebook chats and group MSN chats just aren't as popular as services like IRC were back then.
