I know you must've said this with the best of intentions, and that this sort of belief probably makes these events less random but... don't you think the possibility that this is a mistaken belief makes it incredibly dangerous?
My mum believes people somehow choose their lives (e.g. you chose to be born in your family) and that this works according to what happened in previous lives and what you feel you need to go through (from what I understood, it's more like you're somehow coerced into making these choices in the name of love and spiritual "evolution", whatever that is). I reckon this line of reasoning is terribly immoral because, if it is wrong, it makes us accept revolting actions of others as something they somehow deserved and they happened in order to restore karmic debts; and, if it is right, it makes us accept revolting actions of deities/supreme forces that clearly do not deserve our respect and/or tolerance.
