Fucking hardstyle...

I love how they have all these close ups of pretty girls but the (very short) crowd shots show it's the biggest sausage fest of all time.

I believe the $20M figure was thrown out in an article on Pasquale a few months ago

I agree with the fact number of attendees shouldnt matter when it comes to differentiating your overall festival appearance. The burning man art is neat, the rides are neat. But then the stages fall flat. Its always more rotating lights and more monitors. But lets at least go with themed stage designs. Cover up the trusses at least. EDM events here do focus a lot on artists ill give them that - regardless if its focusing on top 20 djmag artists or overall. This is crowd catering specific and isnt the issue. But simple stuff like a non rectangular steel stage with rotating heads and monitors would be a great start. Doesnt take much effort to be creative. And hell, keep the set pieces for repeat.

Will insomniac be ID&T - hell no.
Can they put more effort in some more unique stuff to differentiate itself from lets say if Ultra had rides - most definitely.

Say they drop 30 million on the total cost of the event....
Say they 100,000 tickets over the weekend.

I think this would sum up the result:

Okay... I'm surprised that you are comparing it to Tomorrowland. Maybe you chose it since it is outdoors and has a similar lineup.

Bar none, I've always felt that the mid-2000's era Sensation stages set the bar as the best overall productions. Ocean of White (Sensation 2008) comes to mind.

Water, Pryo, Fireworks, etc. The whole package done beautifully. FYI, for those that don't know ID&T bought Q-Dance a number of years ago as a subsidiary. The point: make branding for the "light" genres ID&T and the "Dark" genres Q-Dance.

Anyways, while I'd love to see it here soon, I doubt we will. Not because it can't happen, but because I liken the current state of affairs in the US to the early days of ID&T for someone like Insomniac. Insomniac has larger crowds because the audience isn't budding like it was when ID&T surfaced in the 1990's with Trance Energy and what not. ID&T rose to the top of the promotions crews out there, and Insomniac is legitimately working its way there on a national basis. Ultra is a festival thrown realistically by a music label. EZoo (Made Events) is essentially a one off; and Made has no national presence.

We are slowly seeing a move into themeing though in a very different way in the US. We theme on technology rather than "festival identity" right now. The gimmicks on display at various events last year are evidence of that. I'm talking about the massive LED "wall" that was EDC's mainstage and the "moving stage" at Coachella.

Also, and this is a point often missed, but remember that US laws are much stricter than those over in Europe. It's the reason we see fewer lasers and that we see tighter regulations on pyrotechnics and fireworks. Themeing isn't impossible, just needs to be understood that it wont ever be "the same."

One thing I hope does not happen at US massives: the annoying MC that always seems to be at the big festivals. I understood the Lil Jon thing at EDC in LA (He was only working with 3 artists that were playing in LA at the time).

With White Wonderland, it is becoming apparent that Insomniac is attempting to move into a more ID&T like world imo. Whether they pull it off or not, we can only wait and see.

On an aside, I go to the events to enjoy the music and DJs. The production values are always a neat attempt at the massives I've been to, even the smaller ones that work with room dynamics as best as possible where I've had friends play.

I will agree though... ID&T... there is no one like them anywhere else in the world and my goal is to hit up some of the parties they throw at some point in my life.

Sounds about right. This is taken directly from the Economic Impact Report.

"Expenditures by Insomniac in direct relation to EDC 2011 totaled $13.1 million. This amount includes a variety of expenses, including but not limited to, equipment rental, security, transportation, food and drink, and insurance. Because this report quantifies only the economy impact of the event on the local economy, we have excluded all expenditures that would most likely be spent outside of Clark County. This includes any fees paid to performers."
