Toronto has it good compared to NY, LA, Vegas & Miami....

...but in all fairness, that's not really saying too much.

I think the important thing to note in all this, is that's its generally agreed upon that Toronto circa 1998 (or, even 2004) was a hell of a lot better then Toronto circa right now. Speaking solely about partying (atmosphere, amount of venues, crowd, vibe, affordability).

We have a lot of good things going on here (better then anywhere else in North America except maybe Montreal), we're just trying to keep it like that. People have started to see these things fade a little in the last couple years and can't help but speak up about it. Can't blame them.

If you were to go to see the exact same DJs in any of those cities you'd have no choice but to suck it up, so i don't understand the complaining.. Toronto has a good thing going all things considered

How old are you? And have you done any serious clubbing in Toronto within the years of 00-07?

Guv, FW, + CZ clubs are not what JayT is referring to. Those clubs have never had any problems ruining the Toronto scene. it's everything else he referring to.

But those clubs are not the clubs that hold up the clubscene financially. Tourists who come to Toronto don't always hit up those clubs unless they even remotely search up clubs that play good EDM. Otherwise, they'll probably go to some mainstream club downtown.

People may think JayT is washed up or doesnt know what he's talking about or even should go back to his time.... yes I agree...

But they crazy people are crazy for a reason. Maybe because he makes a point.

the $100 number isn't scientific, more symbolic i guess. you're right, if you're just starting out you need to start somewhere. the issue is djs who are past that point, but resort to undercutting just to "win" the gigs which then makes the people hiring them think that this should be the going rate (as opposed to thinking in terms of the quality of the act and paying accordingly). it's exacerbated by the fact that now, most can skip steps that vinyl djs considered vital to the art.

also, when i started spinning (and maybe this is just my experience but whatever), you would be hired to play the night open to close, as opposed to being slotted in between other djs and spinning 1.5-2 hours only. $100 for 4-6 hours of djing, pretty bad money unless you're just starting out and need the live gig practice. i was spending at least $100 a week on new vinyl just to keep up, and that was me being conservative because i was just starting school and basically broke as it was. and this wasn't that long ago, im only 25. it's just that i got into spinning before final scratch and serato became the more or less the standard, and whether or not you think using these kinds of programs are legit, it still comes down to "do you have the basic skills to be a dj in the proper sense, or are you taking shortcuts that are doing nothing except allowing you to undercut those who actually have taken the time necessary to learn those skills"

14. wtf does my age matter. and yes, i lived and clubbed in toronto for 10 years up until last october

so what is it you want? more underground house clubs for the tourists? you want Richmond street to shut down, not sell bottles and play underground music? or are you just bitching because things aren't like they used to be? believe it or not TA represents less than 1% of the people who go clubbing and a lot of people actually ENJOY the whole top40, bottles, etc scene. so let them. the point is that you are in no way forced to deal with it, if you want proper music, good times, no BS, go to one of the mentioned clubs. if not stay home and let the top40 clubs cater to their crowd, who cares. the reason they exist because there's a demand for it. maybe its not your scene, but you're 1 person in a world of 6 billion.

unless you're telling me top40 bottle clubs are taking business from Guv, FW, etc, then i don't see a problem. there's enough clubs around in TO for everyone to do their own thing and be happy as opposed to most major metro cities where you'd have no choice, so fuck off your pretentious 40 year old "back in the day" nonsense and just be happy with what you've got
