You know what has always confused me. Reading manga in the US has far more of a social stigma than anime does (and both aren't considered good things to do), but its the opposite in Japan (and reading manga is considered normal).
I generally prefer manga to anime. The anime never seem to cover the story in as much depth, even on super long serialized series.
Hell even manga that are really episodic in their arcs like Ranma 1/2 are better as manga than the anime.
The only series that I can really say I enjoyed the anime more or equally is Kimagure Orange Road and Touch, and thats mainly because where the manga end the series also end to a degree, but the animes have movies that pick up and end the story lines in a conclusive way.
