Wow, this is an excellent thread! It's nice to see a thread of thoughtful and intelligent discussion, without the flaming. Anyway, now it's my turn.

Well, I love progressive! However, I don't believe it's the "music of the future". By saying one genre is the ultimate level that is aimed for is rather pretentious and narrow-minded, in my opinion. Music is a personal thing. What I may perceive as brilliance, you may all perceive as mediocre shite. I don't think there is one defined path (eg. commercial cheese --> uplifting/epic --> progressive) that everyone undertakes. For sure, many people do find themselves listening to the more commercial side of trance (eg. ATB, Darude), and then evolving to typical trance and then progressive...but not everyone will be like that. The evolution of music is a personal journey; it can't be simplistically defined into a neat little line of thought that will apply for everyone. For me, I discovered progressive around the same time I discovered uplifting trance.

If you’ve listened to progressive and have found it boring, then that’s fine. You shouldn’t be executed for disliking prog! At least you took the time to listen to another genre you wouldn’t normally listen to with an open mind. If you don’t like it, fine...perhaps you may like it in the future, perhaps not. It’s the people who make hasty, uninformed comments like progressive is shithouse boring crap, without even listening to it beforehand, that deserve a beating (in my opinion anyway).

Ahhh, that’s my take on the subject.

To be honest I've been a fan of progressive longer than I realized. Back in the day when I was drooling over Sashas Global Underground albums and whatnot I didn't really think of it as progressive. Back then (late 1998/early 99) I'm not even sure I really knew what progressive meant. I just knew I loved what I was listening to. Since then I've learned what progressive is but the only problem is very few artists really make GOOD progressive music. Sasha, Digweed, and a few others make the list. Thats it.

Wow I'm impressed by some posts here, they are heavy for my Belgian brain hehehe.
But all I wanted to say with this thread is that its all a matter of personal taste. Like someone said its a journey of your life in which u evolve. Completely agree with that. But what annoys me is that there are a lot of people talking shite over different kinds of music (I took progressive as an example) without even listening too it attentive. You know, without even giving it a try. I know if u'r not yet into that stage its very difficult to imagine...
Like someone is into heavy metal or whatelse, to me it's crap.
BUT I understand why people like it, it's a matter of personal taste just like we do to trance. I know they laugh with us, many of my family/friends/whatever/dog say "to what crap music are u listening too?". U know im getting tired of those fucking comments, not because they hate it or don't see anything good in it, but because they don't show respect for other people's opinions. I got respect for everybody, but 99% of the population on this planet have their OWN taste and everything that's not like their's they ignore.
And that's where life is about, it's all about personal tastes, not only with music but with everything.

I like progressive ALOT but i also love uplifting melodic trance and even some hardtrance, I dont think it comes down to inferiority just because we listen to music with a deeper sound it's just down to personal preferance

About your first point u made there
I was TIRED about people always flaming genres (and yes I take progressive as example).
I've been long enough here to know there are many people who dislike progressive, just because they are narrowminded.
And I just took an example there to argue the fact how it really goes....somehow U feel offended by your reaction. It shows that u prolly dont understand what i was trying to make clear. You're the only person here with a dumb reply. So something's wrong there isnt it?

Well I can guarantee you that if there's one person who is very open minded for every kind of music then its me, im glad there are more people here.

About hardtrance being n00bish, again U r too dumb prolly that u take it literally...I was just trying to say that people who flame others who listen to cheesy tracks should read that and think about it that there are progressive fans who think the same way about these people, so next time if there's a flame about cheesy tracks, think about what I said there.

I hope you understand what I'm saying, dont reply with useless posts now. And IF you reply first read EVERYTHING HERE, there something you can learn about.

The ultimate destination if you love music will be Classical. You won't agree with me but I bet you in 20-30 years time some of you will be heavily into Wagner, Beethoven etc. Simply because it's the most complex and sophisticated music out there.

Classical music lovers look down on EVERYBODY else.

I just read through the first few posts so forgive me if I am revisiting an old topic. This is to people (in general) who say sht like: "how can you like that" "You need to have an open mind to like progressive" and "This is the ideal genre to like, you will eventually like it too (in which case you are a fucking follower)." Did you ever think to step outside of your ego-centric universe and realize that there are other entities, thinking and breathing, that may be different than you. Not everyone even likes electronic music at all. Some like classical, some like punk, some like metal, and some like rock. To say tjhat one genre is better than another is rediculous. Same goes for sub-genres like prog and trance. One likes what music touches his soul. Why try to tell people how to think and what to like, its fucking bullshit. [/rant]
