my review from that night

I was there that night and the place was extremely packed - but what do you expect a club like Playhouse to do? Turn down money? It's a business.

Onto Hardwell's set, he can't please everyone. I feel he plays to what the crowd likes and unfortunately to some, the majority of the people there are not diehard EDM fans (it's in the heart of Hollywood at PLAYHOUSE). I think it's actually pretty cool that he played the tracks from Skrillex & Alesso - I think that's a way of showing respect and appreciation. May be lame to the hardcore fans that follow his every track but he definitely had a overall solid set that everyone appreciated for the most part.

If you want to hear his true sets where he plays more obscure songs - you'd probably have to go to a smaller city or an afterparty.

Here's my LINK to the review + a lot of pictures from that night. [

I spot one pretty big Hardwell fan in the front.

exactly what my review said... lol. did you guys even read? lol.

Look, MNS used to be underground and all about good music... not hippity-hoppety/r&b mashup garbage.

If I can go through 3,500 songs that were released in the past month or two... he should be able to do the same... he does this full time...

(what he should be doing... is going through the record pools he's in and blowing our minds with good gems that no one's ever heard.)

(and I'm sorry... playing the same track within 30 minutes because another dj shows up... FAIL)

I wasn't directly speaking and only speaking to you, man. Get over yourself.

But referring to your reply, you're right about MNS use to being underground. I went there when it was around the corner and in a crappy venue - what was venue called? National?

But times have changes - EDM isn't underground anymore unless you want to check out the genres that the bros have not discovered yet or will never get into. I mean you just have to take it for what it is. I feel it's a pretty natural progression for certain DJs to start playing more of that hiphop/top 40/whatever you call it due to all the collaborations these days.

agreed that times have changed. MNS used to be my spot back at National and Las Palmas and since there move to Playhouse its definitely gotten more commercialized. I don't hate MNS but just prefer not to attend unless I'm there to see some good friends. Freddy Be (one of the founders of MNS) has definitely paid his dues doing parties that cater to the "underground customer" but in the end, the mans gotta pay rent This tends to happen to a lot of promoters (not all promoters) that have been doing it for years.

I remember seeing Digweed at MNS!!! That was such an awesome party, no stage bullshit, no special lighting, no special sound, just some turntables, a mixer, and Digweed playing on crowd level against the wall. We all crowded around him.

For sure, tht man has definitely paid his dues. I still feel he's really out of place amongst that uber hollywood crowd - but he's really elevated his weekly nights to the next level. Being able to pack shows on a Monday night is no easy task!

Ha! I found these pictures on Flikr from John Digweed at Monday Night Social way back in 2005. You get 5 brownie points if you can spot a TA in there.
