I think in the context Mixmag used the word 'act' means something like 'artist' and not 'live act'

Is this list necessarily about live acts? I'm pretty sure the KLF never did proper live shows. The most they did was an occasional ultra-long rendition of What Time Is Love during which they threw stuff at the crowd, and the performance at the BRIT awards where they performed a thrash punk version of 3am Eternal with Extreme Noise Terror.

that's what my impression also because nearly all of them have a live component.

When I saw the list I first had to think of the big number of artists which also appeared at (Rock/Pop) festivals like Rock Werchter, Pinkpop, Lowlands, Roskilde and many others.
The Prodigy, Underworld, Faithless, Orbital, The Chemical Brothers and Moby all have been at those.
At these festivals they all were called "Dance" acts.

I'll do you one better...the 2 times I saw them were enough to never see them again. This was in the 90's, I was on enough drugs to enjoy almost anything, yet I didn't. The fact that they were not booked too much here later on probably means that many around here agreed.

I've seen a lot of amazing live PA's over the years that blew minds. RITM was exactly as I described it. Gimmicky obnoxious nonsense that really isn't agreeable to move to. The comparison to crowd was from experience.
