more so the signs of how the recording industry once was. Alot of money being made, alot of it not being reported, you buy gear. And client wants something, you buy it and just keep it just in case. And since there is no point selling it as you just don't get a good return unless you are really hard up, you just keep it.
Do they use it, no. Was it used, probably. But over the course of 30 years and being in that room every day, what might seem like a lot to take in really is not that intimidating if you are used to seeing all that stuff. These types of studios are usually private as a public studio would not sacrifice ergonomics for this cluster fuck of shit that just makes most people anxious.
And most engineers like gear, They collect it. They are proud of their microphone collection and would sell their first porn over parting with their modded vintage gear that nobody else on the planet has.
