I would be very reluctant to serve with conscripts. Some will make the best of the situation and get something out of it. Most will think it as waste of time/not take it seriously/etc. Not to mention after their year or two, most will leave so you don't get a lot of experienced soldiers at their jobs. (essentially you get a less professional military with conscripts)
At least with a volunteer military, you get people who want to be there, for one reason or another. Not that everyone joins with the best of intentions, but at least those guys aren't forced to be in the military.
If the shit really hits the fan, do I want to serve with a bunch of conscripts? Hell no. |
In norway they've been *pretty* good at weeding out the bad seeds, and we have several groups of highly skilled and top trained professional soldiers that we lend out to international ops, covert stuff etc.
Sure, some nut jobs have come out of Forsvaret (The Defence verbum proverbo), but it can also be argued that it was the time after military service that fucked them up. Whatever.
In Norway only about 30% (2006-ish number) of the conscripts are enlisted, but all males has to report to something called Sesjon (not gonna bother find translation) where you do an IQ test, piss test, height++, and a talk with a doctor and an officer. I think I remember talking to some sweet-ass nurse lady too, but I can't be sure. I've talked to alot of sweet-ass nurses, and nurse-type ladies, since that time. I think it was when I was 16 or 17.
Anyways, my point being they got pretty much pick of the litter of service men, and people who don't want to go don't really have to go, so err'bodies happy and we can all feel safe knowing that our national defense, that only has been in service for less than 12 months, are trained well enough to kick ass in international war games, and our professional military are the best of our national defense. Knowing they are present in operations initiated by US of A makes me glad, I'm horrified about the thought of the Americans getting to run wild down there unsupervised.
Edit: WE also have extremely skilled officers, and your military is only as good as your officers. Sure The US Army is big, but what does it matter when you have a 2nd lt who's only been enlisted for 3 months
because your country are having a hard time keeping casualties down so everybody just kinda jumps up a step on the ladder every time one of your guys fucks up routine checks etc. Now that's talking about an unskilled military.
