No, they seem to be about as long as the movies, themselves. Is that intentional? I could just watch the DVDs with Director commentary!

//No wait, I have seen the Episode 1... episode. I thought it was funny, but it's extremely easy to make fun of Star Wars, as it's practically a self-parody at this point. I'd rather see episodes on the original trilogy, as they've been some of the most meme and trope-rich works of cinema and pop-culture.

In any case, more Star Wars is fine with me. Disney definitely has the means to hire the right people, and I too hope they hire people familiar with the expanded universe. I want to see scenes from Luke's Jedi Academy on Yavin, and I want to see him fall to the dark side (he force gripped a Gamorrean to death and wore black in Jabba's Palace... cmon, you saw it coming). Leia ought to learn the force as it's in her blood, but introducing Mara Jade would be fucking awesome, too.

Haha, I didn’t realise you were THAT much of a nerd, mate!

I know nothing about the expanded universe other than what’s been in the games, the rebels are unprepared for our attack. Signal vice admiral thrawn to launch his tie fighters immediately, *wheeze-hiss*.

I haven't read a Star Wars book ever, but I love the KotOR and Dark Forces games to death and have super nerdy friends who played the tabletop game! It's inevitable I pick some stuff up.

The videos don't merely "make fun" of the prequels, they meticulously eviscerate any defence of them on practically every level of cinematic craft. Suffice to say that you're very, very wrong to suggest the plot is anything close to equal in the two separate trilogies, and there's roughly 270 minutes of detailed criticism to show you why.

As for the subtext... the original trilogy was intentionally concerned with very straightforward and archetypal struggles and themes. The "magic" of the original Star Wars films is how they neatly distill the essence of universal feel-good storytelling in the spirit of epics, fairytales and other ancient narratives. The prequels, by contrast, are primarily concerned with the descent of one character from good to evil, with his redemption (as PKC rightly says) dealt with in a subsequent narrative triptych. This is not time-honoured archetypal thematic material nor is it a classical narrative structure, and Lucas is extremely clumsy when it comes to handling a darker, more unconventional dramatic arc. That is the core reason why he gets lost in his awful, awful plots about trade disputes and intergalactic senatorial scheming, why none of his characters are memorable and why all his dialogue exists entirely to drag the limping, heavily deformed storyline along toward its grim conclusion: the controlling idea has gone, and there is nothing left in its place.

i think the PT would've been way better had anakin been a grown up (preferably NOT christensen) in the first film, and had focused much more on his relationship with obi wan (and palpatine) against the backdrop of the clone wars.

you never ever got the feeling that anakin or obi wan really gave a shit about each other. the chemistry between the two was just awful (oooh rescued you from that nest of shitdribbles or whatever it was, fuck). the thought that anakin ignored a decade's worth of teaching from obi wan (his supposed best mate) for some vague promise from palpatine was just terribly unconvincing, because we were TOLD about the jedi relationship, rather than SHOWN its rise and subsequent fall. oh noes, i disagreed with you in a council meeting, im such a naughty boy!

that said, once he became vader and murdered the children, i quite enjoyed the rest of the last film (stupid balancing acts around lava notwithstanding).

A friend and I recently had a 9-hour, whiskey-fuelled Star Wars marathon where we watched the entire new trilogy and associated Red Letter Media reviews. It's pretty much the only way to enjoy the new trilogy.

For added fun, you should have thrown on the Plinkett audio commentary for Episode 1.

If you're curious, he also did one for Episode 4. Since A New Hope is so ingrained in my memory, I managed to listened without even watching the movie and still know exactly what scenes he was talking over.

You'd have been better off posting Doctor Faustus.

I talked to this guy, who had talked to this other guy, and you know the rest, anywhoo... 45 minute episode show, action/drama, and they've contracted a company to do a shit load of Mandalorian style tech, suits and weapons. So you know the drama will be kept to a minimum

Why would I have been better off? Because you know there are numerous parallels in archetypal literature and other artwork that completely decimate your lofty point that the prequels were bereft of "time-honoured archetypal thematic material"? Fratricide is as old as storytelling itself, and what was it that Obi Wan cried at Anakin in their duel in Episode 3? "You were my brother!" One can draw the lines most any way that they wish, you know that.

Besides, far be it from me to muster any defense for the narrative or dialogue of the prequels- I already said they were shitty. But don't try to bullshit me that the struggles and themes of the original trilogy were somehow more archetypal or more intentional, I'm not going to buy that cock lolly.
