Although I don't think this is the case with my university students, I'd be very wary of adding some of my cram school students on Facebook back in the day. The girls were younger, more easily impressed (they were impressed by me, of all people!), and swooned over my English accent (who knew my tropical-Saffa-Mockney could be sexy?).

I'm not sure I'd do this here in Brazil precisely because doing it with university students this can lead to all kinds of problems (from jealousy of other students to the impression I'll favour them just because I'm nice). Koreans are the worst though. It is a heavy drinking culture, and they really can't handle their liquor. All you have to is wander into a Seoul club district late at night to see this epic shitshow. They cry a lot.

I have used the guise of free private lessons to get laid. It's pretty shady, but no money changes hands so it's ok.

Internet's crazy these days. Paranoid real life people are probably paranoid online people. I can imagine you act pretty much the same in real life as you do on the interwebs Lira, so I doubt that you would have a problem having people on facebook that you know IRL. I don't think I would want my students on my facebook, even if they were the same age as me, because I like to segment my work life a bit.

I also think facebook is a social circle thing. I don't want everyone seeing what my friends say to me; example: A friend posting abrassive jokes which my extremely conservative grandmother (she has and uses facebook) reads is awkward. I probably wouldn't be concerned about students being on my page (if they were adults) if they only saw my posts, since I act and say the same stuff online that I would say IRL in general, but if they saw friends posts and comments they'd most likely be exposed to filth that I wouldn't say in my workplace, and wouldn't really want to be associated with. The thing with facebook is it takes out context; stuff you might only say to drinking buddies is out there for everyone you know to read, and that can be a problem if your work climate is strict, or you conduct yourself differently in that environment. Anyway, I think that's what it comes down to.

i have to admit. at first i thought it a bit creepy...but then i told myself that i'm doing an english lesson for free. they know. they were not exactly unwilling.
