Many of these systems are historically unrelated too.

like almost any martial art, although this tought through pain, you will become quite formidable in 10 years or so. on the other hand, learn how to box, and street fight (not just wrestling, submission wrestlin with joint locks and multiple other shitty things) you can be a most formidable opponent in 3-4 years

I plan on starting Jeet Kune Do soon. I like its philosophy (style of no style, etc), and the emhasis towards real street fighting, instead of fancy useless stuff (another concept: discard what is useless). I mean I watch a lot of other styles and a lot of it seems really impractical to use in a real fight.

And since I bore quickly of jogging and weight lifting, doing martial arts would be EXCELLENT exercise.

I hope you don't mean the Krav Maga in the Toronto westend. The instructor is a joke. He practically has no credital to teach an art like this. Less than 2 years experience and 7 years Tae Krap Do.

Took Kung-fu for 11 years. Stopped about 4 years ago. Got kicked out. My teacher found out about a fight that I had, and the other kid was pretty hurt. Even though he alread had a record for fighting. Aside from the circumstances, it's something I regret doing.

It depends what order the belts go in. Different styles have different orders and colours. If he got to red belt in one year (a red in Tang Soo Do is one under black) then a red belt must be quite low in his art. (Unless he trained every day and got super-good real quick!)

karate-do
chi-to ryu
jui-jitsu
a tae kwon do variation
ving tsun (wing chun for you westerners )

and a tiny bit of a few others.

those are the styles i've done. most recent two being wing chun and chi-to ryu, in which i just got my first degree black this past may.

i've been doing this stuff my whole life. eventually you realize that you're not learning how to fight in a certain style, but you're learning how to fight. that's why i can't help but laugh at TKD kids that think they could flashkick someone in a bar brawl.

oh, btw, kung fu (gung fu), didn't originate in china. bodhidharma taught the basic movements of martial arts to what would become the shaolin somewhere between 420 and 520 ad.

thats what i said...

He said the red is below the black, and he got their in a year.

I know that in Capoeira (at least in my group), the belt is not only by your skills, but u have to be a certain amount of time ....
