Of course not. However, we're not talking about adherents here, but full members of the church (priests and the like): People like Michael Baker who molested kids, admitted to doing this, and was told to professional help - only to become a repeated offender. Why was a potential rapist left around children? This is the sort of offence the church should take care of.

Ideally, they'd be "indoctrinating" well-educated people with stable financial conditions, I agree with you there. However, should the Catholic church take a more responsible stance regarding health issues like I said, this will be a great change (for the better) to these poor folks who don't know any better - precisely because they have so little information at hand.

Would you rather have the Church tell them that they should indeed wear condoms (which is what I'm advocating for), or would you prefer if the Church left them alone and hope one day science and education will reach them before AIDS does?

Also, this Pope is known for supporting the poor. Cynicism aside (the Church does waste an insane amount of money on unnecessary stuff), this might also bring positive changes.

As a Jesuit from Latin America, Pope Francis will naturally be grouped with the liberation theology movement that has been closely aligned with socialist activism in the region. Though then bishop Bergoglio distanced himself from the more liberal strands of the Jesuit Order, his commitment to the preferential option for the poor marks him as an ally of those who advocate for progressive economics. The Jesuits were also the first to bring catholicism to the New World, a history that underlines the connection between European catholicism and catholicism in the developing world.

In my assessment, this was a good choice. Latin America is home to just shy of half of the world's catholics, and the Church in the Central and South America has been under pressure from evangelical protestants, such as pentecostals, that have been vying for members. Franicis' Pontificate should shore up the Catholic Church in Latin America. Also, although Francis is Argentinian, he has connections with Germany from his theology training, and importantly has connections with Italy, many of whom were demoralized after Pope John Paul II became the first non-Italian pope since 1523. The move also is a tip of the hat to the global nature of the Church, legitimizing the voices of catholics outside of Europe.

As a catholic, I am very interested in seeing what Francis's pontificate will bring. I hope that, in choosing the name of Francis, the new pope will embody the legacy of the famous mendicant friar that renounced wealth, power, and status to serve the poor with the whole of his being. Que Viva Francisco!

The Catholic church is definitely a force to be reckoned with here, and I hope he's a good leader, specially because of his importance in more traditional regions of the continent. I also like the fact that he's from Argentina - the stream of jokes flowing from Facebook and Twitter didn't fail to deliver

He's a pro-Vatican II heretic. He will undo everything Pope Benedict XVI has done (Though his attempts were slow going) to try and unify the church through the Latin language and mend what centralization the Vatican II council had damaged. The reason he resigned was because he was pressured to after he privately denounced his participation in the Vatican II council.

There is NO salvation outside the Catholic Church. Though the Church has been corrupted by Jewish infiltration (Jesuits) there is still hope and being UNIVERSAL is the key. I should be able to go to any mass and not have to deal with their disgusting 3rd world language. Only the language of the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church, Latin, is acceptable.

Take your damn anti-pope and shove it. The last real pope was Pius XII.
