Did you not thing of grabbing a bigger desk with onboard EQ etc? I'd find that quite limiting.
I liked the idea of a GSR24 with motorised faders via firewire and the valve channel but it's just too much money to justify.
I'll end up with either a ZEDR16 or Mackie 1640i. They'll obviously not sound quite as nice as an SSL, but I think the extra features make up for that. For me anyway.

I probably will keep on using cubase for EQ and FX
I'm trying to get full analogue but multichannel eq's are expensive
So first step will be:
Source > Alphalink > desk for mixdown
Stage 2
Source > desk direct outs > Alphalink > desk alt ins for mixdown
The 2nd setup allows me to mix either DAWless or via daw back into mixer
Dawless is the ultimate goal, but i would need at least 6 stereopairs of EQ to setup on inserts. Maybe some dbx shit, dunno yet

Yeah but I reckon it'd be cheaper to buy a decent analogue desk with EQ per channel already on it than multiple outboard.

Remember I had the ORAM Trident? Sounded very different from the SSL, A&H is Mackie + intergrated controller territory. I.e. No balanced inserts for starters
The superanaloque path of the SSL is unrivaled same as their Maxtrix and bigger units
That's 20k€+ if you want that equiped as rich as the A&H but SSL quality

Since I don't have matrix or x-rack money, i'll settle with esquisite gain staging and summing, using the Daw as backend for automation and EQ / FX
I've also looked at 4x GoldenAge EQ73 (NEVE CLONE)
http://www.recording-microphones.co.uk/GA%20EQ73.shtml
but i'll think for now settle with analogue front end, digital backend and all sequencing done via Genome and Cirklon, both clocked via the Innerclock SyncGen II Pro

You know Golden Age do a decent Neve style pre-amp and also a compressor now as well?
I bet you could get a really nice used SSL or Neve desk for about £20k you know.......
