It is a grand exercise of two things- extensive marketing and after a while it becomes brand value. People who perceive that their Audi, BMW, VW or Mercedes is 'better' than an equivalent Japanese or domestic brand because its repeated often enough and seen through media placement, that it must be better and thus an aspirational object of desire. Given a wide swathe of the general public is mechanically illiterate cretins that don't know the difference between a turbo and an alternator, or see manufacturers numbers representing 'completely unbiased facts', they'll eat anything presented as a truth.
Plus, if you've ever paid a large amount of money for anything, having anything go wrong is a bitter pill to swallow and is simply brushed aside, rather than be proven that you are wrong and made a poor life choice.
I ended up with a Mercedes in our garage instead of a Camry, simply because a certain 'someone' wouldn't let go of it... its a slow as a Camry, its got about the same road holding, ride quality and build quality as a Camry. The differences thus far are:
It cost nearly 4x the price
It has some nice fittings, more features and other stuff
It costs anywhere between $800-2000 to have it serviced, compared to the Camry which would cost about $150-450
Its spare parts are 5-6x the cost of Toyotas
Its insurance is ridiculous
But most importantly, it means that I don't get nagged for being a "stingy tightarse" and get left alone with someone else's aspirations fulfilled.
