I think that soundsystems in clubs these days are designed with techno and house in mind - and thus have a better low, low-mid and high end performance than midrange - which trance needs for its lushness and musical quality.

that'd be my guess as to what is going on.

I haven't heard that term in years, not since the 70's. It means music that sounds best on headphones, so you can hear ever little detail, things your ears don't normally pick up on speakers. Also, you get a better sense of stereo spread, and sounds that pan to the left and right. There were radio shows at one time that featured rock music designed to be listened to on headphones. Pink Floyd's Dark side of the moon, for example. Yeah, trippy stuff, best listened to when high.

I've never heard the term in reference to EDM, that's a new one to me. It's all good though, it would mean people are looking for a deeper musical experience.
