To be honest, I'm looking forward to windows 10.

8.1 isn't terrible and it makes more sense on a multi use machine (touchscreen laptop) now, but honestly, it feel like a misstep.

7 was rock solid, although it really was just what the 2 previous versions (vista, me) should have been in the first place, it just took M$ 8 years to get there.

There is one thing though that i've realized about Windows (and maybe it's just me?), but windows begs you to tinker with it. you know, fuck with drivers, change settings, make it work exactly as you want to.

Whereas my mac just tells you to work. It's the simplicity; the lack of tinkering that makes you get on with shit. I'm sure my ADD has a lot ot do with it but Macs are ready to go and apart from install software, there's really nothing to do.

With this new Lenovo laptop, it;s going to need a fresh install of 8.1 to get the bloatware off it, then all the programs I need and then all the drivers, and then all the system changes I want etc etc etc.

PC's are made for people who want to tweak and they entice you to do so.

One thing I don't like about windows now is this centralized login bullshit for every app, like you do with gmail on a android smartphone. I don't want M$ to have access to all my accounts.

PC's

Hello

yes , there are a lot of cool Linux Operating systems that use only
RAM so they are fast. THey don't need any hard drive at all.

Hard drives are just for storage. Saving etc. You don't have to have a drive physically connected to the machine at all.

http://lazy-puppy.weebly.com/

LazY Puppy

Lazy comes with hundreds of audio tools FX etc. Realtime Kernel i think
free.

THere are other paid ones in 32 or 64 bit....like
http://www.getstudio1337.com/features-2/

these run with tiny amounts of ram. But a lot of ram is supported.

THey can be installed to chromebooks too. Modular based OS for music

Why are you using an HTPC for production? I suppopse there's some crossover but it seems a little off point for the task in hand.

KX studio

http://kxstudio.sourceforge.net/

This "KX studio" pack of pro-audio tools is available free for x86 and ARM chip computers like Chromebooks or any Android gear
that also has Linux installed on it.

KX studio is also available free for windows. 32/64

if you have your computer with some existing Linux already on it, (such
as Debian OS or Ubuntu) then you can just install the full "KS studio install" called "Carla" from the Debian Library. This results in a highly customizable pro audio environment on a Linux machine.

Alternatively you can download the KX studio DVD which is "KX studio" already built into a version of the Linux operating system as 1 thing ready to go. So you would just install this DVD onto an empty computer.(Or the DVD runs LIVE without any install needed)

KX Studio has a good realtime kernel and selection of pro audio apps. Among them is Reaper DAW which is completely set up to run correctly with Wine and realtime kernels. VST is supported.

This KX studio system runs real quik even on x86 atom chips.

"KX studio's" group of audio tools is currently called "Carla" and it is also available in the ARM library of any popular Linux OS like "Debian Linux" OS.

However, Reaper won't be available inside the ARM versions of "KX studio" since Reaper needs a tool called "wine" and wine only works on x86 cpu chips.'

But all other apps for ARM chips are there such as the many Daws like Ardour and others.

So this "KX studio" system will run fine on cheap ARM Chromebooks that have had Linux Debian OS added to them via the "Crouton" tool..... or had a raw Linux install to the hard drive.

Oh, you mean like a NUC. Some of them are getting quite beefy but they hi spec ones are still quite expensive.

Soon all "desktops" will be these or even PC's on a stick (like fully self contained computers on a USB stick).

I can't imagine what kind of software you're running with that, seeing mine would barely run Reason. It's purely for entertainment use.
