the issue I recall was that when the device was put together backwards (ie designed not to work), it still showed the same level of thrust.

Wrong, faster than light theorems are indeed mathematical Solutions to Einstein Tensorial Equations. Not visible or experimentally attainable yet, but mathematically possible.

Kurt Godel also wrote about these closed timeline curves postulating that time travel to the past was impossible.
