Frank woke up feeling his eye (because he saw it get shot in the dream). Donnie's mother waved to Gretchen before because even though she's never seen her, she's seen her somewhere before..

Watched the movie just a couple of hours ago and im still stunned, such an amazing plot…
Anyways, here are a few of my views about the movie:

-Frank saves Donnies life by waking him up and leading him outside of his room, by that he creates some sort of a parallel universe in which the whole story actually takes place. Frank tells Donnie the world will end in 28 days but what he actually means is that this parallel universe in which Donnie is still alive will end eventually in 28 days.

-in the letter Donnie writes to Grandma Death that he is afraid of the answers to his questions regarding her book, but he hopes those answears will come to him in his sleep. Before the plain engine crashes on his house Donnie wakes up and laughes…he got all the questions he seeked, trough his dream or perhaps the parallel universe.

-Franks says his fathers name was also Frank. Donnies father talks about a guy named frank who died on the way to the prom. That Pedophil tells the class that there was a guy named frank who ruined his life. Thoes stuff are some how connected, no idea how tough…

I have more toughts on this but I have to get going, gonna have to watch the movie again soon.

Ok, I'm going to explain this theory in a nutshell, as best I understand it. I read it on some other site and I'm pretty sure it's widely accepted, but decide for yourself.

Spoilers ahead, obviously:

Alright, in that Philosophy of Timetravel book, you read that the main elements of time travel are Metal and Water. Now sometimes, little bits and pieces of metal can interact with water and get thrown into a wormhole into a parallel universe that it creates with its existance there - this is is known as the "artifact." The plane engine is the artifact.

Now, what happens is Universe A (the original) loses it's plane engine to a wormhole. Universe B now has +1 plane engine. This is a paradox. The extra plane engine is what keeps Universe B going, but Universe B is very unstable, and within a few weeks time (28 days) it will collapse, destroying itself and the original universe (I.E. pretty much destroying all existence). Now, the book also talks about how someone "receives" the artifact (this is Donnie), and is granted powers and abilities so that he can return the object to its original universe, correcting the paradox. Notice how Donnie was able to tear the plane engine off of the plane while it was in midair, or how he drove that axe into the school's bronze statue.

There are other people (particularly Frank) who are close to him, who are designed to lead him to the realization and decision of sending the artifact back. Frank orchestrates much of this. He tells Donnie to flood the school, thus he falls in love with Gretchen. Then he has Donnie burn down the house, forcing his mother to leave the house empty so he can throw his party, causing Frank to go out for a beer run and drunkenly run over Gretchen (I've heard people say he burned the house down so his mother and sister would get on a plane, but that's silly, it's a commercial plane and would be flying that route if they weren't on it anyways).

So, Donnie falls in love and then she is killed... this is orchestrated so that he will come to the realization of what is happening, and that he must correct the paradox to save Gretchen. So he does, he sends the engine back to its original universe (and time). We then see Universe B "rewinding" as it is undone and everything goes back to normal. The people still have some faint memory of their expierneces in Universe B, Frank with his eye for instance.

Cool theory man, pretty much sums it all up… except a few parts which still remain unclear here and there. Like for instance what's the deal with frank and that bunny rabbit costume, I mean his got his eye all blown up under that mask before Donnie shot him (The part in the movie theater).

It was a really cool part actually, Donnie asks him what's with the stupid rabbit costumes and he asks him in return what's with the stupid man costume.
Kind of made me think the Frank character was actually god or something, because they do talk about this topic… mainly in the scene of Donnie and the shrink.

Frank the living human was a normal dude who went on a beer run (probably driving drunk) during the halloween party and ran over Gretchen, prompting Donnie to shoot him in the eye. The bunny costume was his halloween costume that he was wearing at the time (minus the big top part). In the end when he touches his eye you can see his concept sketches and such for the costume.

Donnie kills the living, human Frank on the 27th day, but his spirit, you could say, becomes the guide that leads Donnie to do all the things he does. That's why no one else can see Frank, that's why he can travel through time and such.

Check out these links.... Im a huge DD fan and the first link totally cleared some things up for me. the IMDB DD Forums are a great help too.

http://www.tonystuff.co.uk/darko-spoilers.htm

http://www.stainlesssteelrat.net/ddfaq.htm

I would also like to take this oppertunity to post a quote from someone who feels DD is one of the best films ever..... quality stuff:

"I'm a COLLOSAL movie fan and I'm often overly snobby about movies that others believe to be classics (I'm also an utter batard grosse to play against at 'Scene It'!). To be frank (no pun intended, Darko fans!), I am finding it harder and harder to filter out true genius in modern film in a climate where small islands of above-average pulp pass as 'the best of our time'. I long for the day when we can have the consistently high standard of output that our parents saw in the 60's and 70's. As a brazen, yet descerning populist, I demand to know where I can find the next Star Wars, the next Jaws and the next Psycho. Put simply, I'm optimistic enough to believe there is a new Kubrick, Spielberg and Hitchcock out there, but my faith and patience is forever wearing thin.

Paul McCartney once said in an interview that songwriting is an ever-steepening slope against uniqueness because one can only do so much with 12 chromatic notes. As a musician, I agree with that, but I do not believe we should resign ourselves to that when it comes to film. Come on, Hollywood, there are so many things left to do!!

When I first saw Donnie Darko, I was impressed by many things. The off-beat script. The risky, yet salient casting. The well-crafted soundtrack. The truly beautiful art direction. And, of course, the ever-alluring use of a quirky, talented, first-time writer-director. But it took me several viewings to truly appreciate the movie to its full extent.

Unlike 'The Ring' and assorted M. Knight Shayamalan movies, Donnie Darko is not a puzzle that you figure out and then get bored of. Rather it is to film as the onion is to cuisine: a bold piece of endless layers, so complex in its detail, yet paradoxically simple in its beauty and appeal.

The Neptune theater in Seattle has ran this film every Saturday - at midnight - since its premier at the Seattle Film Festival in 2001. Until the DVD release, I saw it on the big screen 17 times and afterward on the small screen 54 times - and for very good reasons!

Since movies are essentially my life, I find it very difficult to answer the question, "What is the best movie of all time?". It's just too hard. But what I do believe is that I have certain criteria for that "undisputed, number one best" and that Donnie Darko comes close to covering almost all the bases.

It's hard finding examples of EVERYTHING you love about movies in one place and I doubt there will ever be a movie that satisfies everyone all the time. However if a movie is capable of stimulating the eyes, ears, hearts and minds the way Donnie Darko does, I remain hopeful.

This film is a must-see for anyone that has even the smallest love of the beauty of film. Beyond the staple movie criteria that Darko satisfies so effortlessly, the movie gains a life beyond the screen. It is that fact alone that leads me to believe that this is close to one of the best movies of all time.

It takes a while to get there, but you eventually see it."
