Red face might as well reply now

Hey hey!

Just thought I might as well put my two cents in on this one since every other fucking ta already has. I think a dj can well...pretty much spin what he wants. Oakenfold is a great producer, and an excellent dj, sometimes however stories of "the ego" can come out which make him out to be quite the asshole.

Because he has hit this mainstream demographic, he tends to also get this "I hate Oakey fan club as well". I do love Oakenfold, however this is just my opinion. I don't mind if people like or hate whoever they want. As long as they can back it up, right?

On a positive note, can we not just support the trance dj's no matter what. Even if their over priced, or have bad attitudes. I mean we are Trance Addicts are we not? I say all power to anyone who is promoting what we love!!!

Jonathan

Satan (eek!) He's Predictable

He played at MTV Premiere party at Rockefeller Center, NYC last Friday.

He opened w/Lost.com- Animal. He has been opening w/that track at EVERY gig. "What it feels like for a girl, Diamondback, Seven Cities, tracks off Tranceport, Closed w/the Prophet. He plays the same set everywhere..I don't see that as passionate.

Personally I really DISLIKE Oakenfold.
His tastes in music are diametrically opposite to mine.
I think he's overrated, and from what I hear his human qualities aren't that great either.
Just my opinion.

im not sure which side to take... what twilo's saying seems to be true, about his recurring tracks.. but id have to say im still a fan (havent got to see him in person yet)
id hope that around 50% of the tracks in a live set of his would be new to me, although like finnhawk said, we'd have to consider that oakie would be playing for a DIFFERENT CROWD in vancouver rather than in london. (stupid damn prog house, dj splice shall put and end to this!)
actually i rather like prog house, but its not what i spin

anyways sorry for getting off track, but if oakie played a very deep set in north america (w/ exception of maybe toronto) people wouldn't be impressed, because the general music population is pretty trance-ignorant.

FOR example: i was talking to an assistant manager for a large party production company about giving him a demo tape, he mentioned that "Rui Da Silva - Touch Me" is really big now.

can you say "behind the times?" this is why oakie has to play anthems.. to get the newbies excited

my last point, judge jules is still caning "caned and unable" i used to like it but now it just makes me sick.

I don't care what anyone says...PVD is the man LOL!!! Seriously though, I agree with Oakie replaying alot of stuff over and over. But, he was one of the first ambassadors of electronic music. If even he plays the same stuff now respect should be paid. Personally, i don't think his mixing is all that but, he's paved the way fro alot of the dj's out there. I think Oakenfold was the one of the dj's that postured the idea that Dj's could be superstars like recording artists.

I think it's quite obvious that Oakenfold plays the same sets on all his tour stops. It's the same formula everytime. No big deal, if he can continue to sell out arenas. Money is power. It would be nice for him to experiment sometimes. I'm sure he does at his European residencies. He probably figures that Americans aren't into trance as much as we are. Sorry for him. PVD blows him away everytime he plays Twilo. PVD's last set @ Twilo was hard as nails, on point, and fresh. He also throws in an older tune here & there, but he makes it work. Nothing wrong with that... as long as the timing is right. Can't knock Oakenfold... but alot more talent out there to be heard besides him. Respect.

It's acceptable for Oakie to play the same (OLD) records at EVERY gig cause the crowd is less educated bout trance???

Thats bullshit. A top DJ should be playing NEW Records. Oakie is lazy he relies on classics & anthem cause he knows they work guaranteed crowd pleaser. There are PLENTY of great trance records that aren't anthems or classics that he can play to get the same reaction.

A great DJ discovers NEW records, takes the risk, & plays them to the crowd.

well, long story short - oakenfold doesn't live up to his reputation

was that Ascension in etown? I only went to see him, unfortunately, I got too sick and never saw his set.

I did see him in mootown in later months, I was disappointed. He goofed a few times while spinning, and the music was ok. Tbe locals Djs flavors was much much better and Max Graham was really good to the tee.

yeah, i went to see him as well. it was supposed to be one of the biggest events in alberta history. too bad it was at a time when the city decided that raves were a horrible thing. the security was so frigg'n tight. i got in line at 10pm and got in four hours later at 2am... and i was at the FRONT of the line... dunno about the saps who decided to show up at 12pm+. that killed the vibe for me. didn't have a good time after that.

also, i saw max graham last year at swirl in montreal. i was not impressed. nothing special. i had went to see pvd, but he was a no show. and it was too gat damn packed in there!

As much as I hate to admit it, I agree with TG. I heard Oakie was a big bad mutha Dj, so I wanted to see him spin. He definite is a crowd pleaser. The last one I seen him spin, everybody was raving about him (but most of these people don't know jack all about trance/house), while I said he sucked like smelly butts. I say this without any bias, I give credit where credit is due, but oakie is really undeserving. He relies too much of past success for his future endeavors - stagnate and his selection is just droning.

and one of my friend who saw him in edmonton. He was really close to where he was spinning, he saw the smugness and the arrogance of oakie. He also said oakie goofed his spinning, and the music was the same old stuff.

so it seems this is his pattern.
