That's just like saying the Pacific isn't an ocean, it's a "body of water". Yes the Vatican is an enclave, but that doesn't prevent it from also being an independant state (ie. a country).

The best statistic for "The richest country in the world" would probably be the total GDP (Purchasing Power Parity) - as provided by someone previously. When you start talking about per-capita statistics you're delving into standard of living, in which case pure economic analysis of any kind doesn't cut it, cos you need to take into account stuff like crime rates, working hours, pollution etc...
