I think the reason .ogg os not very popular yet (tho I agree with what most people are saying that it will never reach mp3 fame) is that it is new. "But I have heard about it for years" you ask, that is because is Open Source (as has been mentioned before) and they release early and often. So there have been beta versions around for awhile.

It is only recently that they finished a 1.0 version of the encoder, so if you have not given them a try I highly recomend it. The earlier encoders not only did not make really small file sizes, also could not even match mp3 quality. This has all been fixed and .ogg rocks!

Also for you vinyl junkies, there is also a related format to .ogg called .flac which is lossless (like a wav or zip file) but is half the size of a wav file. I use .flac to backup my vinyl to CD. This way I will always be able to decode it to whatever the new standard in the future is (if .ogg catches on or someother format) because you do not get the lower sound quality of a lossy format.

As mentiond earlier dont convert mp3 to ogg or vice versa. When you make a mp3 out of a wav file you remove some 'unececery' stuff to reach the low size, the same thing is done with ogg, but not necceserly the same stuff is removed. So if you convert a mp3 to ogg you lose both what the mp3 removes and what the ogg takes away which lead to bad quality

I don't think any format will in the next few years take over mp3, mp3 are spread everywhere, you can find anything on mp3, but ogg.. is just starting. it has to compete with billions of files stored in millions of computers. .mp3'll never die, even .wav didn't die till now!

Well, popularity is up for the releasing groups to spread... after all, it's all up to them. the thing is that it would be really nice to see this format beeing spread arround as it's benefits could be highly used... as the final built version of this format was just finished it's rather new and many aren't aware of it at all.

Mp3 is indeed leading it's kind, though I do think times will change and change rather soon as the internet evolves quickly to say atleast and if something better is available it WILL be used... it's just a matter of time till' people will be come aware of this brilliant new format and will start using it.

BTW- if anyone is interested in any more info, head on to http://www.ogg.org/ogg/index.html

ok.. i just read the first page so i might be repetaing some stuff here, but converting mp3-> ogg isn't great because ... well.. think of it like this:

when you covert wav to mp3, what happens is certain bits of information get discarded. The discarded portions are usually just there, but without them, you won't be able to hear anydifferences. The same thing happens with ogg, but, to retain quality and have different file sizes, one should reason that between two languages, you'll discard different things. So that's why mp3-> ogg ain't a good idea. Also, the ogg will never sound better than the mp3; best case scenario = it will sound the same.

You see when mp3 out of a original CD the quality you lose is lost forever it wont come back even if you make it to wav again

its like resize an image. if you have a big picture and make it half size and use the zoom to view it in its original size the picture will be bad quiality( i dont know the word for it )
