Okay, time to set things straight I did some research and found some info on whether tekno is a style/movement or not.
First of all when you say hardcore is just plain fast and cheesy you're probably referring to the hardcore from the mid 90's (1995-1998). However just listen to the non-commercial hardcore from that period or the more recent hardcore (e.g. Thunderdome 2001) and you'll find no cheese at all. Just plain (very) hard hardcore. The first cd of Thunderdome 2001 shows a very hard industrial dark sound which is more techno stylish than pure hardcore. So there's absolutely no problem in combining techno and hardcore at all. Tracks I'm referring to:
Armageddon Project - Church Of Pentagram
Catscan feat. DJ Promo - Virgin Territory
Armageddon Project - Armageddon Style
N-Vitral - Enhence Nevious
Armageddon Project - Phase II
And here's where I come to the tekno part. Very recently there are many Teknival parties held all over Europe. These are all illegal parties held in squats, industrial areas or even just in the open air. The Teknival movement comes from Eastern Europe and their only goal is to organize parties where there's no commercialism involved. Just a party for everybody at very low costs (sometimes no costs). The Teknival movement consists of neo-punks and alternative people (absolutely no clubbers!!! they look like heavy metal lovers actually ). The music that's being played at these illegal parties is, oh wait there it is , tekno. It's harder and faster than normal techno. It's more a combination of hardcore and techno.
I didn't make this whole story up! It's true. A friend of mine went to such a party in a warehouse very recently. I have no proof of that (pictures or sound recordings), so you just have to believe me. Can't do nothing about that.
Oh yeah, one last thing; I can't give you examples of DJ's or music because it's non-commercial. The DJ's won't make any compilations or cd's. They'll probably get their records from a normal store, but I don't know any tekno artists or tracks. I'm sorry for that.
Hope this clears things up a bit. You don't have to believe me Maybe if I get the chance to get my hands on pictures of such parties or even sound recordings I'll let you know. |
The neo-punk squat scene has existed around London and the rest of Europe for years, and you can probably find pictures on the net if you look. Chris Liberator has done many gigs for free and still does, as have other London Acid Techno DJs like Dave the Drummer, Rowland the Bastard etc, those are the ethics of the acid techno community (Acid Junkie will be able to give you plenty more names than I can). So talking about squat parties doesn't say anything. If you read about the acid techno scene you'll read about exactly the sort of stuff you've described in your post. Chris Liberator is a neo-punk who does free (or very cheap) squat parties in London and plenty of people know about him! He also has a number of compilations to his name, such as the one in my sig.
I'd honestly like to believe that there is some romantic shady underworld that noone knows about throughout urban Europe but I'm afraid I can't. I'm all ears, but if you can't name a single artist of track then it's safe to say it's not a genre. I mean, there has to be a community around it, and therefore some of the tracks, if they were any good, would have been heard of, or at least the DJs. The idea that this community has left no trace of its presence sounds like some sort of ghost story!
I can just imagine these "tekno" heads having a conversation:
Person A: I heard a great tekno set the other day!
Person B: Was that tekno or techno?
A: *sigh* Tekno, are you deaf?
B: Oh techno, I thought you said Tekno.
A: I did say Tekno.
B: But you just said Techno!
A: What?
