Nevermind about easy access to new music material, you missed the point of commercialization. It gets more expensive for the party goer. BAck in the roots and the beginnings of the rave subculture, everybody, even your pet hamster, could afford to go to these raves.

With the subculture, espeically the music, b eing more in the lime light of the public eye and entertainment industry, it may become more exclusive, glamorized, and get bloated with popularity. I think it will lose some of its magic and mystere of the underground subculture.

I like both the old and the new. But then again, I like most music in general except for rap, country/western and that elevator shit. I guess a lot of the American top 40 stuff doesn't do much for me either. I try not to limit myself to only listening to one style of music, though, especially since I've started writing and producing my own. Listening to a wide variety of music opens me up to different styles and techniques that I'll incorporate into what I'm doing. As far as what I listen to the most....trance probably tops the list but it all depends on my mood.

i think the distinction between "underground trance" and.. "commercial trance" is a viewpoint of whos listenin to it..
a track which 1 deems as being commercial may not be at all..
old trance in general i think is more underground because theres less commercial exposure..
trance has only hit radios and mainstreamed in the past several years..
5-10 years ago.. the prog.house - trance scene.. was pretty quality.. and not something which would be like.. played 24/7 on radio and tv..
thats just my view tho

These songs are classics and there are very few songs out there that are as good as some of the ones listed here. It's not that there isn't good new trance out there cause there is, but because trance (and electronic music in general) has gained such worldwide popularity over the years nowadays almost everyone is making trance tunes. In the past u could expect to hear quality songs when u looked for them, these days I find more rubbish then I do quality.


I don't mind the fact that trance is definately going progreesive, and by this I mean that the music is getting more darker and there seems to be more fusion between genre's hence more tech-trance and hard trance songs are comming out. But having said that there will also be producers out there who will make Epic, uplifting trance the kind that most ppl on this forum seem to enjoy. Guys like Rank 1, Tiesto, Johan Gelien etc. will keep churning out the 'hands in the air' sounds cause it's really popular in Europe. Some DJ's like Sasha and Digweed and even PVD to a certain extent though have definately changed the type of music that they play. I'm not saying it's bad cause change is nessasary for growth but listen to PVD - Live at Ministry of Sound (1998 ?) and to his recent sets, there is definately a difference in sounds and sets.

Oakie said that 1999 was the year of trance and I have to agree cause that year was the best for anyone who went clubbin and loved trance music. Right now progressive and Tech/Trance seem to be in favor with the top DJ's but give it a few years and the Epic stuff will be back. (I Hope)

I remember the big kick off in the Nu-NRG scene back in 93 / 94, Marmion, Jens, Jones & Stephenson etc.

Then the explosion of the Goa sound in 96, Man With No Name, Floorplay, TIP, Dragonfly and Perfecto Fluro.

Ahh.. those were the days!
